So youre going through something. Youre sad, youre stressed, and you need a break. Then, you hear about this thing called Mindfulnesswhich is said to be something that can help you. But what exactly is it about?
According to one of the American Masters of Meditation, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Mindfulness is the act of purposely paying attention, while not harboring any judgment on the present moment. By doing so, you would get to experience the moment for what it is.
When you practice Mindfulness, you dont replay the past in your head. You do not concentrate on what already happened, but rather on whats in the moment, and the beautiful things that could happen next.
Incidentally, the term Mindfulness also originated from the word Sati, a Pali term that denotes the spiritual Buddhist process of enlightenmentwhich can reduce the risks of anxiety, and other mental illnesses, as well.
Mindfulness can be practiced during:
- Meditation. Otherwise known as Mindfulness Meditation, this is the act of closing your eyes and then sitting down on a mat, cushion, floor, or even on the bed with your back straight, or while in the lotus position. While doing so, you then focus on the way your breath goes in and out of your nostrils, and how your abdomen moves while breathing. You can do this for around 10 minutes each day. By focusing on your breathing and having calming thoughts in your head, youll be more aware of your thoughts and feelings, that will in turn make you more compassionate, self-aware, and responsible for whats going on in your life.
- Any time during the day . Mindfulness is also something that you can practice all throughout your day. You can do it while eatingby observing tastes and smells of what youre eating, while doing chores, listening to music or the sounds around you, and also when youre trying to understand whats going on with your body.
In other words, its easy to add Mindfulness in your daywhich also means that you actually have lots of chances for changing your life for the better!
Maybe youre still wondering: how exactly did Mindfulness begin?
Mindfulness actually has Buddhist rootsspecifically in Vipassana , or Clear Insight Meditation. Its defined as having an awareness of present events, not just as a whole, but from moment to moment.
You can see it this way: according to Buddhist practices, when you meditate mindfully, or practice mindfulness, you would be more insightful about what reality is about, and you would not just focus on whats on the faade. This reality covers whats said to be the three marks of existence, which are:
- The impermanence of everything that exists, or the fact that nothing is permanent in this world, making you think of the this too shall pass passage;
- The fact that whatever exists may be unsatisfactory, and;
- The existence of the non-self , also known as Anatta, or that there is no permanent unchanging soul in your body.
You see, there are many facets of your personality that exist, and by trying mindfulness, you get to delve into these things. You get to enter the said stream of consciousness that will help you experience the power of rebirth.
Mindfulness then got out of the Buddhism spectrum alone, and had roots in esotericism, or the use of unconventional ideas to quiet the mind. This was prevalent in the early 19 th century.
You can then connect this to Zen Meditation, the act of counting onwards and backwards, focusing on your breath, and just trying to reconnect to your inner selfone thing you probably dont often do nowso you could find the peace and joy that you thought have been lost for a long time.
It was then popularized in America and other parts of the world by Jon Kabat-Zinn, the creator of the Stress Reduction Clinic, and a well-known Professor Emeritus. He then created the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Technique , which aims to help people recognize their problems, not to wallow in them, but to actually exorcise them from their lives. Mindfulness is believed to have a lot to do with the reduction of stress and anxiety.
In fact, a number of psychological and psychiatric facilities all over the world have been developing various techniques of mindfulness to help people undergoing therapy. In a way, they believe that science and meditation could actually go together, and bring some good in the world.
