INTRODUCTION

Gambling is the fastest-growing addiction of the 21st century. This is due largely to the Internet, which has enabled people who previously would have shied away from betting shops and casinos to gamble in the privacy of their own homes. It has become all too easy to log on, enter your bank details and gamble away a fortune, without anybody having the faintest idea youre doing it. As a result, gambling addiction is no longer a problem affecting predominantly men. Everyone is vulnerable these days.

Its not just the predatory gambling companies that are culpable but also governments. Relaxation in the gambling laws and in particular the laws governing Internet gambling has opened the door to countless new gambling products. Betting companies have become increasingly imaginative in the new ways they come up with to entice us to gamble and the betting industry has enjoyed a boom. But while an ever-growing number of betting companies are winning big, there are hundreds of thousands if not millions of people who are losing. And often with devastating effect.

You will be aware of all the harmful effects of gambling, yet there is something more compelling that keeps drawing you back to it. The aim of this book is to remove that force, not through the use of clever tricks or mind games, but by applying a method that has been proven to work time and time again.

Allen Carrs Easyway method has helped thousands of people to quit smoking, alcohol and other drugs, as well as to stop overeating and going into debt. It works by unravelling the misconceptions that make people believe that they get some benefit from the very thing thats harming them. This book applies the same method to unravel the misconceptions that make you believe there are good reasons to gamble, despite all the evidence to the contrary. Unlike other methods, it does not require willpower. All you have to do is read the book in its entirety, follow all the instructions and you cannot fail to become a happy non-gambler.

The time to get free has arrived.

A HARMLESS BIT OF FUN

Everyone gambles, dont they? The occasional flutter on a big horse race, a lottery, a raffle at the village fte. Its just a bit of fun, isnt it? Something to lend a bit of spice to our lives?

It is true that gambling has become part of everyday life, with advertisements for betting firms invading our privacy via television and the Internet on a daily basis. But beneath the veneer of fun lies a serious problem that is ruining the lives of millions of people across the world.

WHY YOURE READING THIS BOOK

I can only assume you are reading this book because you want to stop gambling. Like so many other gamblers, you have reached a point where you sense you are not in control that gambling is controlling you.

Perhaps you take that as a sign of weakness, a lack of willpower an inability to stop despite having numerous good reasons to do so.

I have good news for you. The reason you have not been able to control your gambling is nothing to do with a lack of willpower and everything to do with an ingenious trap that you and millions like you have walked into.

That trap is called addiction.

WHAT TYPE OF GAMBLER ARE YOU?

There are so many different ways to gamble available to the general public that, not surprisingly, gamblers come in many shapes and sizes. Some restrict their gambling to the occasional lottery ticket, others gamble daily online. Some prefer the environment of the casino or betting shop, others prefer to gamble at home in private.

Youre looking for a cure for your specific choice of gambling, so lets take a look at some of the stereotypes.

WOMEN GAMBLERS

Not so long ago, very few women gambled. Why? Because they didnt have the opportunity. The rise of internet gambling has seen a concurrent rise in the number of women who gamble a number that is now on a par with men.

Women are turning to gambling as an escape from the pressures of life: juggling work and motherhood, or finding themselves stuck at home and bored. For the gambling industry, women represent a vast untapped market, which they have targeted mercilessly.

Many women who gamble do so in secret and the pressure to conceal their problem leads them to take greater and greater risks.

CASUAL GAMBLERS

Problem gamblers envy casual gamblers because they appear to be in complete control of when and how often they gamble. But the perception that people who only gamble occasionally are not hooked is false and is one that often leads ex-gamblers back into the trap. They reach a point where they think theyve got it under control and one gamble now and again wont harm them. Thats because they dont understand addiction. One bet is all it takes to hook you again.

As long as you believe there is some pleasure or crutch in gambling, you will remain hooked.

CUTTING DOWN

With any addiction, the dose increases over time rather than decreases. Anyone who tries to restrict or cut down their gambling is fighting against their desire and, therefore, cannot be happy and is set to fail.

When you cut down, you reinforce the belief that you are sacrificing something precious and you feel a sense of deprivation. The more you deprive yourself, the more precious it appears to be and, therefore, the more hooked you become. Sooner or later your willpower gives out and you find yourself more deeply trapped than when you started.

Cutting down doesnt work. The only way to become a non-gambler is to stop gambling completely.

STOPPERS AND STARTERS

Heavy gamblers think casual gamblers and stoppers and starters have the best of both worlds. They appear to be able to gamble only when they feel like it. And, of course, theyre only too happy to go along with that misconception.

But if they enjoy gambling, why do they keep stopping? And having become non-gamblers, why do they start again?

The obvious answer is that they dont enjoy being gamblers or non-gamblers. They have the worst of both worlds.

SECRET GAMBLERS

Secret gamblers spend their lives living a lie. Not only do they lie to themselves that they get some pleasure or crutch from gambling, they also lie to the people they love. Theyre so utterly ashamed of what they are that they dont want other people to know.

If you gamble openly you can at least stand up and claim that you do so because you choose to. As a secret gambler, you cant even adopt that brazen attitude. It makes you feel as if youre a pathetic slave. You go through life despising yourself and feeling ashamed.

ALL GAMBLERS ARE THE SAME

Whatever type of gambler you think you are, however you choose to gamble, the truth is all gamblers are in the same trap. Heavy gamblers and casual gamblers, overt stoppers and starters and secret gamblers, they are all caught up in the same tug-of-war: when theyre gambling they wish they didnt have to and when theyre not gambling they wish they were.
