In 1983, after countless failed attempts to cure his own addiction to nicotine, Allen Carr discovered what the world had been waiting forThe Easy Way to Stop Smoking. Since giving up a successful career as an accountant to help cure the worlds smokers, he has built a global reputation for his phenomenal method and a network of clinics spanning the world. The Easy Way to Stop Smoking became an international bestseller and has been published in twenty-seven languages. These books have been followed by The Only Way to Stop Smoking Permanently; How to Stop Your Child Smoking; and video, audio, and CD-ROM versions of the Easyway method.

In 1997, Allen was invited to speak at the 10th World Conference on Tobacco or Health, held in Beijing, an honor that would make the most eminent physician proud. His method and reputation could receive no higher commendation. He is now widely acknowledged as the worlds leading expert on helping smokers quit.

The success of Easyway encouraged people with other problems to approach Allen for help. This has resulted in the publication of Allen Carrs Easyweigh to Lose Weight and The Easy Way to Enjoy Flying. After tests with some of his patients it was discovered that the simple logic of Easyway also worked well for people with a drinking problem.

Foreword to the American Edition

When I wrote The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, I knew I had discovered what all smokers dream ofan easy way to quit cigarettes. That book has now sold over six million copies for one reason alone: because it works. I also knew that the method could be successfully applied to alcohol, and in this book that is exactly what I have done.

I was a heavy drinker for over thirty years and I understand the alcohol trap. We all know the terrible damage that drinking can do to your health, your finances, your family, your social relations, and your self-respect. These are all reasons for stopping and although they make you want to quit, they do not help you to do so, because they have nothing to do with the real issue: why you drink.

My method removes the need and desire for alcohol before the drinker stops. It dispels all the misconceptions that can make it difficult or even impossible to imagine a life without alcohol. It removes the fear of quitting; the fear that you wont be able to enjoy social occasions; the fear that you wont be able to cope with stress; the fear that youll have to go through a period of misery and deprivation; and the fear that you may have to fight the craving for the rest of your life.

This book can enable any drinker to break free from the slavery of alcohol easily, painlessly, and permanently. It removes the feeling that you are making a sacrifice and enables you to enjoy the highs in life more and handle the lows better right from the start. Youll rediscover a quality of life you had forgotten even existed and most important of all, you will not miss drinking.

I hope you enjoy your freedom as much as I do.

Allen Carr, November 2005

Introduction

On July 15, 1983, Allen Carra confirmed chain-smoker for a third of a centuryextinguished his final cigarette and announced that he had discovered a method of stopping that would enable any smoker to quit easily. This method has helped people quit immediately and permanently, without using willpower, gimmicks, or substitutes, without suffering withdrawal pains or gaining weight. Most important of all, smokers have been able to quit without spending their lives resisting the craving, believing that social occasions will never be quite so pleasant, and worrying that stress will not be so easy to handle without a cigarette.

At the time few could believe that such a seemingly magical cure was possible. After all, it was common knowledge that quitting smoking required immense willpower, was usually accompanied by weight gain and horrendous withdrawal symptoms, and was about as easy as climbing Everest. Sadly, millions of smokers still suffer from this illusion.

Considering the thousands of hours and the millions of dollars the medical profession had spent searching for an effective method to quit smoking, it is understandable that no one could believe that a lone ex-smoker, with no medical training whatsoever, had succeeded where they had failed. Members of Alcoholics Anonymous will find this concept easier to accept. As a former member of AA, I can confirm that literally millions of alcoholics would testify that they owe their lives not to medical experts, but to fellow alcoholics.

Allen Carr is now widely acknowledged as the worlds leading expert on helping smokers to quit. The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, has been a best seller every year since it was first published. It has now been translated into twenty-seven languages. There is also a worldwide network of clinics based on Allen Carrs method.

I originally heard about Allen Carr from friends who had attended his clinic and were overjoyed by their results. I was completely skepticalafter all, some had only quit for a few days. I assumed that they had spent a fortune on the latest miracle cure and were trying to make me fall for the same gimmick, but I knew that time would tell. It seems hardly believable now, but I actually wanted them to fail. It annoyed me that it didnt seem to bother them if I smoked in their presence, and as time went by I began to realize that they were genuinely smoke-free and clearly enjoying the fact. Instead of pitying them because they could no longer smoke, I began to envy them and for years I felt like a social pariah because I still smoked.
