FOREWORD
Mennonite understandings of peace and peacemaking have always been dynamic and sometimes the source of considerable controversy. Some observers have viewed the debate as obscurantist, and even some participants in the conversation have viewed it negatively. This lively volume describes a particularly fertile epochthe past fifty years of discussion and development regarding peace, that identity-forming conviction.
Just as striking as the swirling crosscurrents are the deeply held commonalities. At every significant historical juncture, the concerns for ethical integrity and a Christlike witness have been present. Without such communally held commitments nurtured over time, there would be no church with a definable tradition. The commonalities and the crosscurrents, the challenge of new issues and changing circumstances, have together generated conspicuous growth and vitality.
