CONTENTS PREFACE I had struggled with my weight since childhood I remember - photo 3

CONTENTS
PREFACE

I had struggled with my weight since childhood. I remember being told by my older brothers that I was fat when I was five years old. I was told by a school nurse to stop eating yogurts when I was eight because I was overweight! Strangely enough, when I look at photos of myself from those times, I was positively waiflike by todays standards.

Still, those words stuck with me and for the next 35 years my weight went up and down. Its no exaggeration to say that I was completely obsessed by food and my looks. No event was untouched by my mental struggle with eating. Every day a huge chunk of my thinking was taken up with how fat I was, when and what I could eat next, which clothes to wear to conceal my weight and, above all, what other people thought of me how weak, trapped and stupid I felt. Food made me miserable and yet I couldnt see a way out.

I visited Allen Carrs Easyway clinic in Raynes Park, London on two occasions in 1997. Firstly to get free from smoking and a few months later to escape the alcohol trap. On each occasion, I emerged six hours later completely free and and I havent felt the desire for a cigarette or a drink since. When Allen applied his method to weight loss, I was excited to give it a try. As with smoking and drinking, he made me realize that I had been completely hooked on an idea that certain types of food were playing a role in my life that they simply werent. Since I accepted the reality that the fattening foods that we all tend to think of as our favourites simply arent the amazing pleasure or crutch that were led to believe, and that the foods that are best for us also taste the best, my life has improved in every way.

Mealtimes are so much more enjoyable because Im eating foods that are nutritious and taste great. They satisfy me without making me feel bloated. I dont feel envious of what other people are eating I can see theyre in the same trap I was in. When I get an invitation to a special event, its no longer overshadowed by the dread of finding something to wear. These days I actually look forward to shopping for clothes. All that time, headspace and energy that were previously consumed by my eating issues are now spent ENJOYING LIFE.

I will always be grateful to Allen for the help he gave me and I was delighted to be given the opportunity to work for Easyway and help other people to benefit as I had. Allen originally devised his method to help people quit smoking and it was and still is a phenomenal success.

More than 400,000 people have attended Easyway clinics in over 50 countries and Allen Carrs Easyway books have been translated into more than 40 languages, have sold more than 16 million copies and the method is estimated to have cured 30 million people. This success has been achieved not through slick advertising or clever marketing campaigns but through the personal recommendations of the millions of people who have succeeded with the method. Allen Carrs Easyway has spread all over the world for one reason alone: BECAUSE IT WORKS.

The Easy Way for Women to Lose Weight addresses a problem that is by no means unique to women but is, nevertheless, one that traps women in a particularly aggressive way, such is the focus on body image these days. The beauty of this method is that it makes eating a pleasure first and foremost, with the happy consequence of keeping you looking and feeling great without having to make sacrifices or put yourself through punishing exercise routines.

Thanks to Allen Carr, I feel happy and healthy in a way I simply could not have imagined before I discovered Easyway. I am sure that this method will change your life just as it has changed mine.

Senior Therapist, Allen Carrs Easyway

INTRODUCTION

By John Dicey, Worldwide Managing Director & Senior Therapist, Allen Carrs Easyway

For a third of a century Allen Carr chain-smoked 60 to 100 cigarettes a day. With the exception of acupuncture, hed tried all the conventional methods to quit, using willpower, nicotine replacement, hypnotherapy, substitutes and other gimmicks, all without success.

As he describes it: It was like being between the devil and the deep blue sea. I desperately wanted to quit, but whenever I tried I was utterly miserable. No matter how long I survived without a cigarette, I never felt completely free. It was as if I had lost my best friend, my crutch, my character, my very personality. In those days I believed there were such types as addictive personalities or confirmed smokers, and because my family were all heavy smokers, I believed that there was something in our genes that meant we couldnt enjoy life or cope with stress without smoking.

Eventually he gave up even trying to quit, believing: once a smoker, always a smoker. Then he discovered something which motivated him to try again:

I went overnight from a hundred cigarettes a day to zero without any bad temper or sense of loss, void or depression. On the contrary, I actually enjoyed the process. I knew I was already a non-smoker even before I had extinguished my final cigarette and Ive never had the slightest urge to smoke since.
