ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This study began with my doctoral dissertation on the retelling of Hasidic tales by modern Hebrew writers, prepared under the supervision of Arnold J. Band. It is to him that I owe my initial interest in attempting to study this phenomenon of the retelling of traditional Jewish narratives by modern Hebrew writers, which is so central to the development of modern Hebrew literature. I am grateful to him for making important comments on the manuscript of the book as it developed, as well as to others for reading the manuscript either in whole or in part and offering valuable suggestions. I thank Max Ticktin for his careful reading of the whole manuscript and for his encouragement. I would also like to express my appreciation to my colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania, Barry Eichler, Judah Goldin, Arthur Green, David Stern, and Jeffrey Tigay, whose comments on those sections of the manuscript related to their fields provided important perspectives on the traditional narratives that I discuss in the book. My students in courses on modern Hebrew literature at the University of Pennsylvania provided me with stimulating forums for trying out my interpretations of the texts discussed in this study. I am also most appreciative of the initial interest and encouragement of Sarah Blacher Cohen, editor of the SUNY Series in Modern Jewish Literature and Culture and of Michele Martin, acquisitions editor of SUNY Press. In addition, I wish to thank the editors of
