This book is dedicated to my father, a salesman personified.
For over 30 years, he was the best cookie salesman in Glens
Falls, New York. He saw to it that all the grocery stores were
well stocked with Dane-t-Bits' Fig Newtons, Lady Fingers, and
Kentucky Cremes.

Acknowledgments
A great many people have contributed to the writing of this book, far too many to name. During the last decade and a hall over twenty thousand individuals have participated in my problem-solving workshops... to them I owe a debt of gratitude. Their insights and meaningful suggestions have been invaluable. Thousands of individuals have used the problem-solving model in personal encounters as well as in organizational situations and they have shared their experiences. Over the years, many of my own colleagues have been particularly insightful and helpful. I could not have written these thoughts without them.
Special recognition is given to Susan Williams, who provided suggestions for formatting and writing style. Lisa Busjahn provided invaluable editing of the manuscript. Michelle Dressen made sense out of many of my thoughts in her design of the graphics used in the book. I'm also indebted to Phyllis Bannon, who serves as our "Human Spell Check."
Although my name appears as the author, this book couldn't have been written without the help and assistance of all of these individuals.

Introduction
This book was originally written as a textbook for managers in the public service. It was well received, selling over 25,000 copies. As a result of its success, I was invited to lecture and present workshops on problem solving. In the beginning, most of the participants were professionals in public service. The concept of the problem-solving process "caught on," and as a result, lay groups, volunteer groups, women's clubs, real estate personnel, and many nonprofessionals became participants in my workshops. I received many requests to put my ideas in writing and make them available to the general reader. This book is an attempt to do just that.
I draw on over 25 years of experience in teaching and in conducting problem-solving workshops. The problem-solving process presented here represents a seven-step procedure for solving everyday problems. It allows readers to take charge of their lives and the problems they face daily. It should be pointed out however, that nowhere in this book will you find any suggestion that problem solving is an easy task.
This book is not about magicthere are no special secrets! Problem solving requires perseverance and hard work. The reader should not infer that by following each step of the process all of his or her problems will be successfully solved! In order to become a successful problem solver, you must develop an attitude of constructive discontent and a desire to find a better way of doing things.
As I began to work with this process, I realized that planning alone was not the whole of the process. I became aware of the importance of being able to perceive forthcoming problems, and designing procedures to solve them. In a sense, solving problems is the very essence from which human endeavor is composed.
