Foreward
Alcohol and drug problems have been a priority concern in the United States since 1975. Alcohol is implicated in nearly half of all deaths caused by motor vehicle crashes, suicides and homicides. With greater public awareness of their dangers the general use of alcohol and other drugs for recreation has generally declined in the United States since 1985. However alcohol is still the foremost abused substance in the United States leading to dependence and many alcohol illnesses. In addition, approximately 20 million Americans use marijuana at least once in a year and nearly as many Americans have experimented at least once with crack cocaine, placing themselves at risk for developing drug dependence and other problems.
Public health professionals are actively engaged in reaching out to inform the public about the extent of the national problem and the effectiveness of treatment for alcohol and drug dependence. The development of effective treatments for alcohol and drug dependence has encouraged more individuals to acknowledge alcohol and other drug problems. Even while general use of alcohol and drugs is decreasing, the number of individuals addicted to alcohol and psychoactive medications has remained about the same or even increased in the population. National recognition of the gravity of alcohol and other drug problems has changed the social climate so that more people are willing to consider the possibility that they, too, may have a problem.
Dr. Cohen's specialty training in preventive medicine and addiction medicine work together to produce a writing style which puts the reader in the office of an experienced, concerned, and caring doctor explaining the things any concerned person or family need to know.
