This book is dedicated to all of the sufferers of chronic pain and fatigue, whether from classic fibromyalgia or the many other conditions that are commonly misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia. Many of you have been mismanaged and even mistreated by the health-care system and by providers who generally have just not been informed enough about this disorder to provide you with a proper evaluation and treatment. Some of you have even had your sincerity doubted; you have been told that your problems are all in your head and that there is nothing really wrong with you. If this has ever happened to you, it is unfortunate and inexcusable, and I am sorry. If this book helps even one of you who have had this kind of experience better understand what may really be wrong with you and find some solutions that help you feel better, if it helps you to be more empowered as an informed advocate for yourself as you try to navigate the health-care system going forward, then the effort will have been more than worth it.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
F irst, I need to acknowledge the incredible work of my writing partner, Alison Rose Levy. Her ability to take my sometimes very complex ideas and former academic writings and presentations and wordsmith them into a form that everyone can understand and be entertained by is nothing short of astonishing. This book would simply not have been possible without her. The contributions of my good friend and colleague Ed McKiernan, DPT, who provided the movement and exercise instructions for the book based on his many years of physical therapy experience, and of Amy Berger, MS, who supplied the wonderful explanations of the relaxation techniques, made for a more comprehensive and better book, and for that I am most appreciative.
Much of what I have come to know about this mysterious thing we call fibromyalgia has been influenced over the past couple of decades by my friend and much respected colleague Michael J. Schneider, DC, PhD, a gifted doctor and researcher at the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. He has coauthored many pieces in medical journals and textbooks with me on fibromyalgia and has also been a true companion in this quest to shed some much-needed light on the subject for sufferers and health-care providers alike.
