LIST OF CONTRIBUTORS

JEREMY BLACK is Professor of History in the University of Exeter, and has published widely on seventeenth and eighteenth-century history. His recent books include A Military Revolution? Military Change and European Society, 15501800 (1991) and European Warfare, 16601815 (1994). He has also edited The Origins of War in Early Modern Europe (1987).

T. C. W. BLANNING is Professor of Modern European History in the University of Cambridge. His books on the French revolutionary period include The Origins of the French Revolutionary Wars (1986), The French Revolution: Class War or Culture Clash? (1997), and The French Revolutionary Wars 17871802 (1996). He is also the editor of The Oxford Illustrated History of Modern Europe (1996).

ROBIN BRIGGS is Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, and has published on both science and religion in the seventeenth century. His recent publications include Communities of Belief: Cultural and Social Tensions in Early Modern France (1989), and Witches and Neighbours (1996).

EUAN CAMERON is Professor of Early Modern History in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. His publications include The Reformation of the Heretics: The Waldenses of the Alps 14801558 (1984) and The European Reformation (1991).

STEVEN GUNN is Fellow and Tutor in Modern History at Merton College, Oxford. He is the author of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, C.1484154S (1988), and Early Tudor Government, 14851558 (1995), and the editor, with P. G. Lindley, of Cardinal Wolsey: Church, State, and Art (1991).

NORMAN HAMPSON is Emeritus Professor of History in the University of York. His many books on the eighteenth century include The Enlightenment (1968), The First European Revolution, 17761815 (1969), Danton (1978), Prelude to Terror: The Constituent Assembly and the Failure of Consensus
