Foreword
Points of View: Readings of Kierkegaard is not a book. One might well say of this text what Jacques Derrida has written of his own work, Dissemination:
Picture 2Picture 3
This (therefore) will not have been a book.
Picture 4Picture 5
Still less, despite appearances, will it have been a collection of [seven] "essays" whose itinerary it would be time, after the fact, to recognize; whose continuity and underlying laws could be pointed out; indeed, whose overall concept or meaning could at last, with all the insistence required on such occasions, be squarely set forth. (3)
Written over a period of twenty-two years (196082), the essays that comprise this volume display no overall coherence and do not unfold a strictly consistent interpretation of Kierkegaard. As his title indicates, Louis Mackey presents "points of view" and "readings of Kierkegaard." Despite the lack of any continuous thread of development, it is possible to group the points of view

represented in these readings (and rereadings) under the general headings "early" and "late." In the middle of the volume, there is a hole or a gap; a ten-year silence separates the earlier and later essays. During this decade of silence, Mackey rethinks Kierkegaard (and one suspects much else) from A to Z. Between the writing of "The Analysis of the Good in Kierkegaard's Purity of Heart," "The View from Pisgah: A Reading of Fear and Trembling,'' and "The Loss of the World in Kierkegaard's Ethics," and the writing of "Starting from Scratch: Kierkegaard Unfair to Hegel," "Once More with Feeling: Kierkegaard's Repetition," "A Ram in the Afternoon: Kierkegaard's Discourse of the Other," and "Points of View for His Work as an Author: A Report from History," Mackey's preoccupations shift. A different style and a new language invade his text. Strange terms displace familiar categories: absence, absurdity, beginning, boundary, castration, closure, crypt, desire, discontinuity, dissemination, double bind, excess, expenditure, exteriority, farce, fault, gender, gift, humor, hymen, irony, iteration, jest, jouissance, kenosis, kinesis, logocentrism, madness, margin, mime, naming, negativity, neuter, other, paradox, phallogocentrism, quotation, repetition, representation, rupture, sacrifice, signature, signification, silence, text, truth, unknowing, uncanny, ventriloquism, violence, virginity, wit, woman, writing,
