Foreword

For many of us who have apportioned even a small part of our life to the care of others, one inescapable truth is witnessing the difficulty to manage pain. This perspective can be especially challenging when we are faced with our own chronic painful condition or that of a close friend or family member. At the foundation of this experience is the realization that both the mechanisms and personal impact of chronic pain are complex and require a multidimensional approach to restore our physical and emotional well-being. As Professor and Chief of the Division of Pain Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, I lead an extraordinary team of physicians, scientists, therapists, nurses, and staff who are dedicated to finding ways to restore a persons physical, behavioral, and social health in the setting of chronic pain. It is within this circle of excellence that I have come to know Dr. Rachel Zoffness and to appreciate the critical role she provides in the care and education of patients suffering from chronic pain. Drawing on her extensive clinical experience as a pain psychologist, her deep understanding of evidence-based care, and her role as an educator, she is uniquely qualified to have crafted such a useful and scientifically rigorous manual for adults suffering from chronic painful conditions.
