FOREWORD

ON RARE OCCASIONS, you meet someone in a profession who is doing exactly what he or she should be doing. My friend Aaron Karmin is one of those people. What Hank Aaron was to baseball, Keith Richards was to rock n roll, and Robin Williams was to comedy, Aaron Karmin is to psychotherapy. Hes a master of his domain, and I was thrilled when I learned he was writing a book on anger management for men. With this book, Aaron will have the opportunity to share with the rest of the world his knowledge, his set of therapeutic skills, his extensive experience of working with anger, and his wisdom. If anger has been a problem for you, let me be the first to congratulate you on finding the right book written by the right author.

I met Aaron 15 years ago, when we were both starry-eyed psychology graduate students. Today, as a US Navy psychologist, I have a clientele made up largely of young men, so anger is an issue I encounter in my sessions on a daily basis. Despite my extensive training and experience in the treatment of mental health conditions, there are still times when I reach out for consultation and advice. One of my greatest resources in these moments continues to be Aaron.

Aarons experience with anger is second to none. He spent several years working for an anger clinic in Chicago. He has authored a blog on anger management for the last several years and has been asked to speak publicly about anger management a number of times. He also has a regular guest spot on a Chicago radio station. Aaron is as smart as they come and, while his insights are thoughtful and sometimes complex, he communicates his thoughts in a way that makes them clear and precise. He has a gentleness about him that is necessary for every effective clinician. He has a passion for what he does, and he uses his unique style of humor at exactly the right times.

Given how common anger is, its amazing that many mental health providers know little about treating it. The idea of walking away and counting to 10 is as simplistic as it is unhelpful. I believe this book will serve as the antidote to that long-standing dilemma. Although this is intended to be a self-help book, I suspect that it will serve as a valuable resource for clinicians as well.

Working as a clinical psychologist, I frequently hear the following comment: It must be really hard hearing everyones problems all day. Where do you go when you need to vent? When this question is asked, I again think of my old friend Aaron. Hes a therapists therapist, and Im excited that you will be the next beneficiary of his talents.

PREFACE

OVER THE PAST few decades, what epidemic has had the most dire effects on American men? Is it cancer? AIDS? Drug abuse? Heart disease?

None of the aboveits violence.

Were well acquainted with violence against women and children, and with how violence affects their lives. Much more than we tend to suspect, however, violence is also a direct threat to the health and well-being of men.

Every year, there are millions of acts of violence. Some of these acts kill men, often leaving widows and orphans in their wake. But even when a violent encounter doesnt prove fatal, a man can suffer for the rest of his life from chronic physical injuries or mental scars caused by the attack.
