Yoga Nidra: Beyond Technique

Yoga nidra has been called many things. In Sanskrit, the word nidra translates as sleep, and yoga nidra has become widely known as the yoga of sleep. It is also described as conscious sleep, the sleep of the yogis, transcendent, cosmic, and Divineall of which are true. Yet no matter how we try to capture the essence of yoga nidra, no words can truly transmit the magic and mystery of the practice. If you have ever floated in a sea of stars or felt that you have peered through a wormhole into another dimension during yoga nidra, you know what I mean.

The yoga pose Savasana (Corpse Pose) is done in a supine resting position, and yoga nidra is traditionally practiced in this pose. People in Savasana may look like theyre sleeping, but if they have set the intention to practice yoga nidra, they have merely begun to preparethere is much more going on.

The association with sleep has both positive and negative connotations. On the positive side, it makes the practice very attractive. Who doesnt want to lie down and sleep? Studies show that most of us sleep an average of one to two hours less per night than people did sixty years ago. The poor, single mothers and people in marginalized communities are at even greater risk of suffering from sleep deprivation. Not getting enough sleep causes more harm than just feeling tired; studies show that it can weaken overall immune function and general health. The association of yoga nidra with regular sleep is certainly one of the reasons the practice continues to gain popularity in our sleep-deprived, biohacking society.

If we reduce the practice of yoga nidra to something as simple as a kind of nap, we may never discover all the clarity and power that a devoted practice can awaken. Science continues to learn more about sleepfor example, how delta waves produced during sleep help to form long-term memoriesbut so much is still shrouded in mystery. Just what did the rishis and rishikas, the original seers, know about the power of yoga nidra?

A growing number of important and powerful voices are urging people to rest, to do less, to move away from the toxic culture of grinding it out and crushing it. Rest is vital to thriving. We have gotten the message that we need to actively make time for rest, to take up space, and to clear and protect space for those who have been denied the ability to rest safely. When we practice yoga nidra, we not only experience the power of deep rest and relaxation, but we get to wake up to our essential nature, one that is filled with radiance and bliss. This awakening has lasting and transformative effects on every aspect of our lives. Deep rest is just one of the many gifts we receive from the practice of yoga nidra.

The word nidra has another meaning besides sleep: ni means void, and dru means to draw forth or reveal. Yet a void is unknowable; it has been described as both empty and full. Philosophers and poets have dedicated pages upon pages to this concept, one we cant quite grasp. Our journey toward the void requires us to surrender to the unknown. The Indian English poet, philosopher, and yogi Sri Aurobindo described the void in The Life Divine:

A silence, an entry into a wide or even immense or infinite emptiness is part of the inner spiritual experiencethis silence is the silence of the spirit which is the condition of a greater knowledge, power and bliss, and this emptiness is the emptying of the cup of our natural being, a liberation of it from its turbid contents so that it may be filled with the wine of God; it is the passage not into non-existence but to a greater existence.
