PREFACE
IF YOU WANT A HEALTHIER relationship with food and your body, or if you want to lose weight for the last time instead of just another time, I think I can help you. Whether overeating and overweight are minor annoyances for you or oppressive obstacles keeping the life you want to live out of reach, there are suggestions in this book for you. If some of the referencesto binge eating or food addiction, for instancedont apply to you, skip over them. If youre well acquainted with them, thats fine, too. So was I.
Reaching a stable weight that is reasonable, healthy, and attractive for you requires a transformation in the way you think and the way you live so youre free to make wise choices. If your life stays the way it is now, your weight will get back to where it is now in spite of your best intentions. Changing on the inside is the key to making outer changes last.
The attitudes and actions I recommend will, if you take them to heart, result in the kind of weight loss that will get you through the rough and tumble: pregnancy, nursing, and birthday parties; vacations and changes of season; good days, bad days, and holidays; employment and unemployment; love and loss; PMS and menopause; injury, illness, grief, glory, agitation, celebration, and the rest.
If you heed these suggestions, you will lose weight, keep it off, and stop worrying about food and the state of your body. I can make this statement because worries about food and my bodyout-of-control eating, crash diets, sensible diets, losing weight, gaining weight, shame, guilt, deprivation, and despaircolored much of my life for thirty-three years. The past eighteen have been different because of what Im about to share with you. As you apply these principles in ways that make sense to you, you will be able to replace watching your weight with fully living your life. Believe me, it is a magnificent trade.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
IF IT TAKES A VILLAGE to raise a child, it takes at least a neighborhood to bring a book into being. For this one, I owe sincere thanks to my editor, Matthew Carnicelli, who recognized the importance of these ideas from the outset; his assistant, Michele Pezzuti, who has offered valuable insights and suggestions; and all the other capable people at Contemporary Books-McGraw-Hill who have contributed their expertise to this project.
I am, of course, extremely grateful to my family: my husband, William Melton, who believes in my work and supports my dreams more than I could ever have imagined or expected; my daughter, Adair Moran, who provided the wonderful insights of a young woman who, even in the intensely appearance-oriented world of acting, has exceptionally good sense about food and weight; my stepchildren, Sin Melton, Erik Melton, and James Melton, who, like William and Adair, made sacrifices to help me get this book finished on time; and my mother, Gladys Marshall, who gives me a vision of what it is to stay fit, vibrant, and plucky through every stage of life.
As with every book I write, I am grateful to Patti Breitman, my literary agent, champion, and confidante; my foreign rights agent, Linda Michaels, and her staff, who give my books an audience around the world; my computer guru, Pete Shiflett; and the reference librarians at the Kansas City, Missouri, Public Library. (I thought that with the Internet I wouldnt need them anymore. Wrong.)
