Introduction
Weve all found ourselves being overcome by the firm grip of overwhelming emotions at some point. This could be a feeling of depression that paints life with a gloomy color, dreadful anxiety, excessive anger, panic attacks that strike without warning, or perhaps, other feelings that forcefully overtakes our hearts and minds. When we are emotionally thrown off balance by these feelings, it becomes paramount that we take conscious and intentional steps toward regaining strength to find relief as soon as possible preventing any further wreckage being done to our overall mental health and wellbeing. During the late stages of my emotional breakdown episode and in my quest for emotional freedom, I came across a unique but fascinating treatment option that seemed quite different from other types of treatments for people who suffered from depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. This treatment option is called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The more I dug deeper into this therapy and its inner workings, the more I realized how depression, anxiety, anger and panic overtake our thoughts, plunging it into harmful directions, and how CBT can help to retrain our thoughts in serving us better. I also learned that when we build more activities into our daily lives that are not only rewarding but fun, they tend to have very powerful antidepressant effects. Being present with positive curiosity and openness, I discovered, is one of the most powerful ways you can break free from anxiety and depression. This approach, the mindfulness-based method, has received wide acceptance and is backed by sufficient research as the "third wave" of CBT, including other cognitive and behavioral techniques.
I have observed that when we are fighting the battle to win back our emotional and mental wellbeing, we usually lack the time, willingness, and energy to go through pages of research findings to find what can work for the given situation. We need straight to the point treatment options that can be used right away. However the case, they are not easy to follow through with as I have learned that even while these treatment options are effective and simple to apply, they do require an amount of work and effort. This is particularly hard to do when you are depressed and demotivated, or when you are fighting back panic attacks. This is where the power of CBT comes into play, providing you with a goal to work toward, as well as carefully designed step by step techniques to help you get there.
As much as possible, I have strived to ensure that the succeeding chapters of this book are simplistic, engaging, and helpful to enable you to overcome your current emotional dilemma. Also, this book has been designed to serve those who havent heard of CBT, those who currently work with a therapist, or who have made use of CBT in the past but need a new resource as a refresher for up to date information.
At the end of this book, you will;
