C ognitive Behavioral Therapy, more commonly known as CBT, is a type of therapy that works around the assumption that there are simply some behaviors that cannot be controlled through conscious thought alone. In fact, it posits that all behaviors actually occur thanks to a mixture of internal and external stimuli and a lifetime of conditioning in one an infinite number of ways. While some types of therapy are extremely interested in the deeper meanings associated with various thoughts and actions, CBT is only focused on results. This means it focuses on understanding a specific issue but only so that you have a better way of dealing with it once and for all.

While it was first created to help those with depression deal with their condition, this type of psychotherapy has become a popular way of dealing with a wide variety of issues including anger and anxiety as well. At its heart, however, its primary goal is to help users mitigate problems they are having directly by finding their associated negative behaviors and any associated thoughts and then changing them into something more beneficial. CBT is a mixture of behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy and thus makes use of the guiding principals of each.

When it comes to dealing with mental issues, regardless of what they may be, CBT considers them to all be the result of some sort of stimuli that affected you in a particularly negative way, plus any unhealthy avoidance responses youve developed to deal with them in the interim. CBT has proven especially helpful when treating issues caused by psychotic disorders, nervous tics, eating disorders, dependence disorders, addiction, anxiety disorders, PTSD and mood swings. While no type of therapy is ever going to be right for everyone, it has been proven to help those who are dealing with the conditions outlined above more effectively than psychodynamic therapy as well as many other more traditional options.

The version of behavioral therapy that CBT is based on was first put forth around the start of the last century and was popularized around the time that the Pavlovs Dogs experiment began to gain worldwide attention. For those unfamiliar, the experiment entailed a scientist training dogs to salivate at the sound of a bell by always playing the bell by always playing the sound of the bell while feeding them. This idea was then capitalized on by a scientist by the name of Mary Jones who used the same general steps to help ease a wide variety of fears in children who had experienced serious trauma at a young age.
