Dedication
It is from the depth of an unfathomable love and great respect that I dedicate this book to my best friend, Diane. She happens by no mistake to also be my wife, my lover, my spiritual play-mate, my cheerleader, and, most important, my partner in life. By her example, she has taught me the sweetness of extending selfless service and loving-kindness to others, whether friends or strangers. This planet is a better place because of her presence here. Truly, God has blessed me beyond measure with the gift of this lady in my life, whom I will love forever.
TO THE READER: ABOUT THE WORD GOD
Because I would like you to gain maximum benefit and enjoyment from reading this book, I encourage you to remember that words merely serve as symbols which represent beliefs, thoughts, and ideas that each of us must interpret for ourselves. I am keenly aware that words can mean different things for different people. Throughout this book there are numerous references to God. At times I will use other words describing God that mean the same thing to me, but in a different way depending on the context in which it is being used. I often interchange the word God with other words such as Source, The Infinite One, Being, Presence, Self, The Whole, Divine Mind, Life, Spirit, Universal Intelligence, and even, It. There are more words I use as well, but I trust you get my point. In my mind there is one God, which is known by many different names.
To further make my point, some people might be comfortable with yet other names for God such as Atman, Brahman, Allah, Bahaullah, The Christ, The Buddha Nature, Wakan Tanka, The Creator, The Great Maker, Jehovah, Elohim, Yahweh, The Father, The Great Spirit, The Beloved, and so on. When it comes to names for God there seems to be something for everybody. Then again, others may not resonate whatsoever with any particular concept or name for God. Perhaps the G word even makes them want to shut down and disconnect from what is being said.
As you begin to read The Art of Being I invite you to open your heart and move beyond any attachment to the words used, remembering they are but symbols, which, at the end of the day, have no more or less meaning than what we individually choose to assign them. Call it what you like, I say its all good!
Peace,
Dennis Merritt Jones, D.D.
Foreword
There is a haunting call within our consciousness enticing us toward reality. Reverberating within our soul, it urges us to become and express increasingly more of our essential self. We are on the planet to respond to that call, to wrap our consciousness around the divine treasure within us, and to be joy, creativity, peace, compassion, and unconditional love. Each and every one of us is an individualized expression of undivided reality.
In his spiritual classic The Science of Mind, Dr. Ernest Holmes wrote, Never was there a cosmic famine. We may stumble, but always there is that Eternal Voice, forever whispering within our ear, that thing which causes the eternal quest, that thing which forever sings and sings.
With its mountains, deserts, valleys, and oceanic vastness, confident footing and balance is required for navigating the terrain leading to that which sings and sings within us. And because at times we tend be a little hard of cosmic hearing, the singing may not necessarily sound so sweet. Eventuallydespite years of cleverly dodging and postponingthere comes that mystical moment when its as though an audible voice shouts through the clouds of our density, You there... yes, I mean you.... Youre bustedits time to wake up! Ah, the first step in humility: listening. This leads to the second step: surrendering. Its often at this juncture that one begins to seek a teacher and teaching that outstretches a hand of compassionate guidance for the journey to reality. Wise are those who firmly and humbly grasp that benevolent hand.
The transmission of spiritual awakening may wear many faces, but in truth there is only one: that which is. Our universe is not a was or a will be system. It is an is system vibrating within the now measurement of time. This great is-ness custom-designs itself for each one of us, perhaps in the form of a book, a temple, a teacher, a teaching, even a challenging experiencewhatever it takes for us to begin answering the perennial question Who am I and where am I going? Simply put, our primordial purpose is to respond to the impulsion from within to solve the mystery of our individual existence, to find and be the authentic self that is, has been, and ever shall be.
Even in our current state of development, we are perfect candidates for awakening. At whatever juncture in our lives we pierce the illusory thought that we have a separate existence from that which is, the cosmic clock will be set at the only time it keeps: now. How patiently the awakened self vibrating and circulating its life force within us awaits our reacquaintance with the reality of who and what we really are.
Who am I and where am I going? You are the answer to this question. You are here to ask the question and to be the answer. Using the very stuff of your everyday life is a potent place to begin a conscious experience of awakening. You can choose in every moment of each circumstance, each activity, spoken word, and thought. Stepping into the moment with an awakened mind removes the tension from making that choice. Wakefulness causes each moment to be fresh. We make each choice as though its the first time, and we make it with utmost clarity and discernment of mind. Then we become cocreators of our life with its very sourcethat which simply is.
