PRAISE FOR CONSORTING WITH SPIRITS:

Miller has written the definitive, next-level book on working with spirits. This is not for beginners, yet he takes many complicated texts and breaks them down into relatable exercises for the 21st-century magic worker. No matter your level of experience, if you work with spirits in any manner, you will find a gem of wisdom in Consorting with Spirits.

Jacki Smith, author of Coventry Magic with Candles, Oils, and Herbs, and
The Big Book of Candle Magic, founder, Coventry Creations

This latest offering from Jason Miller fills a gap in the literature of occultism that we didn't know we had. It's a plain-spoken, anecdotal guide to spirit communication. But don't let the breezy approach fool you into thinking it's another pop occult book. It reminds me of Jess Stearn's Yoga, Youth, and Reincarnation in its mix of personal experience with references to the seriousand seriously intimidatinggenre of ceremonial magic and what Miller calls Sorcery. For many people who are thinking of dipping their toe into the subject by getting practical experience, Miller's guide is a perfect (and non-denominational) companion. For those who have been studying the more academically-oriented tomes on magic, and become more bewildered by the hour in the mix of dead languages and dead wizards, this will clear up some of the confusion. Miller has the background and is generous with sharing his own experiences, and for that reason alone the book is worth the price of admission.

Peter Levenda, coauthor of Rites of the Mummy

Jason Miller has written an engaging and highly useful guide to spirit work. Smart, funny, and, most importantly, practical, this is a book rooted in historical methods of magic but not bound by them. I especially liked how Jason looks at the various approaches to the spirits from multiple lenses: Christian, Pagan, and Luciferian with a bit of Tibetan Buddhism thrown in for good measure. Top notch.

Aidan Wachter, author of Weaving Fate

Witty, insightful, engaging, enjoyable, and a definite game changer. Consorting with Spirits is everything you would expect from Jason Miller and more!

Christopher Orapello, podcaster, artist, witch,
and coauthor of Besom, Stang & Sword

For many witches, sorcerers, magicians, and the like, working with an assortment of spirits is central to their practice. Spirit work is certainly one of the cornerstones of my practice. Jason Miller's Consorting with Spirits is a rare treasure. This book manages to provide a sensible frame of reference for spirits, a balanced mix of level-headed caution with confidence-building encouragement, and a rational discussion of practical techniques. This book is for people who actually want to work with spirits, not just think about them. The personal experiences and insights Jason shares are gold for those who are ready to improve their practice. I am heartily recommending this book to all my students.

Ivo Dominguez Jr., author of The Four Elements of the Wise

At long lastmodern witchcraft has been provided what it so very much needs: a clear and concise guide to actually advancing your practice. Jason Miller's Consorting with Spirits is an affably frank and detailed look at how any practitioner may go about forging connections with a variety of different types of spirits without getting their butt kicked. This will be an invaluable book to any witch wanting to progress beyond 101.

Tara-Love Maguire, coauthor of Besom, Stang & Sword

Excellent, practical techniques for experienced occultists interested in expanding their practice to include working with spirits. Thoughtful and insightful, there's much to learn, ranging from working with well-known spirits to ancestors to local spirits with lots of exciting magic to add to your witchcraft. One of my new favorite books!

DEDICATED TO THE SPIRITS AND THOSE

Acknowledgments

First and foremost, I wish to thank my wife and children for their patience and encouragement during the writing of this book. When you throw writing a book on top of the demands of work, marriage, and parenting, it makes it harder on everyone. Their patience and support mean the world to me.

A very special thanks to my best friend and first student, artist and Sorcerer Matthew Brownlee, who provided the art for this book. My work would not be where it is without him.

Thanks to all my initiators, mentors, teachers, friends, and informants who opened their doors to me. Special thanks for this go to John Myrdhin Reynolds, Lopon Tenzin Namdak, Kunzang Dorje Rinpoche, Cliff and Misha Pollick, catherine yronwood, Tau Nemesius, Walter from the Globe, Paul Huson, and Blanch Krubner. You all opened yourselves up as mentors for me as a young man, and I would not be anywhere close to where I am today without your guidance.

Perhaps more than anyone I need to thank the students of Strategic Sorcery and all of the other programs that I run. Your questions, stories, and field reports give me the insight of a thousand Magicians instead of just my own. I would not be able to lead the life I do without you, so thank you.

Friends and peers who have been constant support and who let me bounce ideas off them are too numerous to mention, but I need to shout out to Mat Auryn, Christopher Bradford, Fabeku Fatunmise, Brianna Saussy, Aidan Watcher, BJ Swayne, James Foster, Sara Mastros, Jesse Hathaway, Jack Grayle, Jake Stratton Kent, and so many others who put up with me online and in person.

All of my books are guided by spirits; this one was guided most strongly by Astaroth, the first spirit I ever conjured, and who has held up her end of our pact for more than thirty years. The Goddess Hekate, who revealed a profound and detailed training that has now reached more than a thousand students. St Cyprian, Martyr and Magus, Sorcerer and Saint, who helped me to reconcile the forces of Christianity and Diabolism that have each pulled at me since I was a child.

I want to thank all at Weiser who worked on this book and who were extremely generous with deadline extensions.

Foreword

Standing at the crossroads, you can see the point of intersection between the right-hand path and left-hand path, the past and the future, religion, and blasphemy. It is the liminal point where opposites paradoxically meeta middle ground from which to operate and choose the path you will travel down. Being the point where two roads intersect both literally and metaphorically, the crossroads has long been a symbol associated with the spirits of magick. Traditionally, one goes down to the crossroads to meet with a powerful spirit of magick. One might go there to make a deal with the devil or to work with the Goddess of witchcraft, Hekate, or to meet with the lwa Papa Legba.
