Praise for Emotional Healing

This is rock-solid, practical advice on how to heal yourself emotionally by a fine GP who knows his brain science and has long experience of helping people find their way through emotional crises. Above all, he does not medicalize the mind but instead offers a powerfully humane array of first-rate advice.

Professor Ian Robertson, Professor of Psychology, Trinity College Dublin and author of The Stress Test

I want to reassure you that it is always possible to put yourself back together again, and I have seen it happen many times with patients in my own medical practice. If there was ever a reason to buy a self-help book, this quote captures it perfectly. Emotional distress is part of modern life. Emotional healing, explained in a most accessible way by Dr Barry, is your route back to good mental health. Probably his best book ever!

Dr Muiris Houston, medical journalist and health analyst with The Irish Times

An intensely powerful book filled with clear tools to help us survive and cope with some of the most profound moments in our lives. Moving and thoughtful.

Bruce Daisley, author of the Sunday Times No. 1 bestseller The Joy of Work

Another fantastic book from Dr Barry, this time focused on emotional healing. The book deals with understanding and tackling negative emotions including dealing with very painful and difficult topics such as the death of a partner or child. A personal touch is brought throughout the book and it is both a very interesting and enriching read.

Professor Catherine Harmer, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience, University of Oxford

There is a lot of talk these days about Post Traumatic Stress but very few people are keen to talk about Post Traumatic Growth. In this book Dr Harry Barry provides a practical and structured ABC approach to help us deal with triggering events the big life crisis and the day-to-day challenges. All you need is a pen and a blank page when a situation causes you distress. Then, taking it step by step with Harry, you can get a birds eye view of your destructive thinking and how it is impacting your life. You will also see that your feelings are not facts. It sounds simple but you might be surprised to see just what youve wrongly believed about yourself and the world around you when it is laid out before you in black and white. So if you are tired of turning your pain in on yourself or projecting it onto others this is a way out. In a sea of self-help nonsense, Emotional Healing is truly an inspirational book and a practical how to guide. Dr Harry Barry is the best in the business so when he says you can emotionally heal your life believe him.

Niamh Horan, Sunday Independent

I love this book. Emotional Healing will give so much hope and practical help to so many who feel adrift in life, convinced that nothing can fix them. But Dr Barrys vast body of work, coupled with his thirty-five years in the field, gives him both the medical and scientific insights and the practical steps to take to heal ourselves. This book can change your life. It teaches us to fix ourselves.

Cathy Kelly, author and UNICEF ambassador

Whilst the amygdala in your brain controls emotions such as sadness, depression, anxiety, panic, anger or rage, grief however is better known to many of us. Harry has nailed it in one word survival. If you have lost someone special from your life, you will go to the well of Emotional Healing. In this book, many, many times, hope will be found there!!

Oliver Doonan, father of Anthony, who died by suicide

Emotional Healing is a refreshingly helpful book for anyone who is seeking to have a better understanding of their emotional life and wellbeing. It is written in a very simple straightforward style which makes it accessible to everyone, young or old, with or without emotional problems. It is a resource book that is full of hope. For the therapist, social worker and counsellor it is a well-researched evidence-based excellent guide for their work. And for anyone struggling with emotional problems or distress it has the potential to be a powerful self-empowering and transformative book.

Sr Stanislaus Kennedy, social campaigner, author and founder of Focus Ireland and the Sanctuary Meditation Centre

As adults we teach our young people how to understand and express their emotion, but in the absence of effective solutions, we dont teach them what to do with the emotions once they have expressed them. Harry and I have worked for years in showing people how to heal their emotional distress, leading us to happier, more fulfilling lives. In Emotional Healing, Harry brings the reader on this journey. Understanding the most common reasons that cause our distress but more importantly, what to do about it.

Enda Murphy, psychotherapist and author; SeeMe.ie, Supporting adults support young people

Most of us live surrounded by the turbulence of our times, often overwhelmed by its incursion into our lives. We may be brought down by the personal traumas and losses of life that affect each of us, finding our resilience and ability to cope wanting, unable to help ourselves or our families and friends. Unfortunately, most of us have grown up without learning in school or even in our families how to take care of ourselves emotionally, particularly in such situations. The strategies outlined by Dr Harry for responding to such upheavals can help us develop the emotional resilience to put ourselves back together again and recover the ability to not only take care of ourselves, but those we love.

Professor Larry Culpepper, Professor of Family Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine

Dr Barry understands how we all think. He understands our emotions. These insights mean he understands how to help us heal when we feel broken. In this, his latest book, he shows in practical, sensible and helpful ways just how to do that.

Dr Fiona ODoherty, clinical psychologist

INTRODUCTION

In times of significant emotional distress, we may almost become strangers to ourselves and wonder if we will ever feel normal again. It is perfectly common to feel that you are broken or changed for ever by a difficult experience, or that you will never get over what happened. I want to reassure you that it is always possible to put yourself back together again, and I have seen it happen many times with patients in my own medical practice. As a society, we do not teach our children or ourselves about how to treat emotional distress, and yet there are so many simple and accessible tools available to us. This book will open up a door into the world of emotional healing, and show how you can access such tools.

Most of us will encounter times of significant emotional distress and will experience feelings of despair or hopelessness. In these times our emotional world is in turmoil. We may feel broken inside as life, with all of its vicissitudes, comes calling. It is highly likely that you have already experienced such periods of emotional upheaval, or perhaps you are in the middle of one right now. It comes to us all.
