Chapter 1- What isHypnobirthing?

One thought that expectant mothers' mindsturn to again and again is childbirth. Many have trouble decidingbetween a natural birth, or taking the simpler route and havingthemselves medicated throughout the most painful parts of theirchild's birth. Regardless of whichever option that you decide isbest, every mother should consider preparing their minds and bodiesfor something that's called a Hypnobirth. But what exactly isHypnobirth? How is it done? Would this be the right birth plan foryou and your baby? Will a Hypnobirth eliminate the need for painmedications? These and many other questions that the mother-to-bemay have will be answered within the following paragraphs of thisarticle.

Hypnobirthing is the recreation of a methodthat has been used for thousands and thousands of years by ourancestors. According to this method, if you properly train yourmind and your body to let go of all of the fear, stress, andtension during childbirth, that you can, in theory, experience abirthing experience that isn't full of pain and discomfort. By notfocusing on all the pain and discomfort, mothers will be able tofully focus on bringing the life inside of them into the world.

For this method to work, expectant mothersmust take the time to learn about their bodies. DuringHypnobirthing, mothers will be able to make all of the muscles thatare in use during the birthing process work together in harmonywhile your body is in a more relaxed, serene state. Hypnobirthingwill teach you how to achieve this relaxed state, letting yourmaternal instincts take over for a birthing experience that is morecomfortable for you. Although the prefix "hypno" can lead you intobelieving that you will not be present during the birth of yourchild, this is far from the truth. You will not have some personhypnotizing you with a weird pendulum or anything of the sort. Youwill be in a self-induced trance, which will feel similar to adaydream. This trance will allow you to be able to focus more fullyon your baby. You will be completely responsive and you will feellight, comfortable, and relaxed. You will be able to feel what isgoing on inside your body but since you've trained your mind tooverlook the pain, you will only feel a certain degree of yourcontractions.

Although Hypnobirthing may sound like anexcellent birth plan to many of the mothers reading this book, toknow for sure your best bet is to discuss your thoughts with yourdoctor or midwife. Chapter 2- HowDid Hypnobirthing Come Into Being?

The use of hypnosis during childbirth is nota new idea, but is one that has been popularized in the latetwentieth and early twenty-first centuries, largely by familieslooking for natural forms of childbirth without the use ofmedications. The first research and writings undertaken in thisfield of childbirth were completed by the English Dr. GrantlyDick-Read and French obstetrician Michel Odent, which werepublished in the 1930s and still form the basis of modernhypnobirthing techniques. Despite Dick-Read founding a Britishbased National Childbirth Trust in the 1950s, new techniques werenot developed to bring hypnobirthing to the mainstream until the1980s.
