Psychology Book
Dear Reader:
I'll admit it: I had to drag myself to my very first psychology course. It was just another required course I had to suffer through. But then something remarkable happened; I became hooked. It quickly became my favorite class, and I found myself wanting to learn more and more, to delve deeper into the studies and to further my education in psychology. I no longer saw psychology as a required course but a lesson in life.
It is my hope that you, too, will view psychology as a lesson in life and hunger for those answers it gives us. Whatever your pre-conceived notion of psychology may be, I ask that you put it aside and just read. You will soon find yourself absorbed in this world where questions are answered and an understanding of yourself and others is developed. Far more than just an academic study, psychology is a real-world study whose information can be applied to your everyday life.
Acknowledgments
I'd like to express my deepest thanks to Angelique Pinet, Brooke Bolton, and Lora Bolton for all their help in the writing of this book.

Introduction
EACH OF US HAS an interest in psychology. How can we not? Psychology surrounds us; it is a part of our world and a part of us. From the toddler who gets on his parent's last nerve by asking why? repeatedly and demanding answers, to your next-door neighbor who is asking herself why? over and over in an attempt to understand the complications of her life, we all have a desire to understand ourselves and the happenings in our environment. Psychology is what helps us answer those questions.
Psychology is an ongoing study devoted to discovering, understanding, and explaining human nature the behavior and mental processes that make us who we are. As psychology encompasses a complex network of study, one book couldn't possibly cover all the information available; however, the goal of this book is to give you a working understanding of the important basics, laying a foundation for further study if you so choose.
Whether you realize it or not, you've already begun your study of psychology with all those questions you ask yourself on a daily basis. You are inherently curious about your feelings, behaviors, and motives as well as those of others. You are often exploring your environment and evaluating how you fit in with it. You are constantly receiving sensory perceptions and processing them. All of this, and more, is part of psychology.
To set the stage, you will learn about the different branches of psychology and how each has made its own contributions to our knowledge of modern psychology. It is very interesting to observe how theories have developed and evolved throughout the years. You may even be shocked by some of the treatments used in the past. As this is a constantly evolving discipline, it is important to take what we've learned in the past and expound on it.
