C ouples with one or both partners who suffer from anxiety can find their relationship becomes strained. The sufferer may worry about the other partners feelings and fear that they are withholding affection. Meanwhile, the non-sufferer may feel abandoned or unloved by their partner. There are ways for couples to manage this and stay together, though it will depend on how much each person is able to compromise.
The first step is for the sufferer to recognize when anxiety has become a problem. This might be obvious if they find themselves doubting everything their partner says or feeling anxious in situations that used to be would mean a need needs there after some time of counseling so as not to make their anxiety worse. It might be less obvious if they are still able to go out with friends or deal with day-to-day relationships. It is worth trying to notice if the anxiety can be traced back to a specific point, such as being afraid of losing their partner. Some sufferers will also find that they are coping with life better when they have control over some aspect of it, such as work. Otherwise, there may be a certain amount of guesswork involved.
The next step is to bring up the subject of anxiety in the relationship in a calm conversation. Ideally, this should occur after one partner has made sure that he or she has thought of some way for both partners to better cope with the anxiety and after the therapy sessions have been completed. The non-sufferer needs to listen and take in what is being said without interrupting. While they might be worried about the sufferer moving away from them, it is important that both partners feel their needs are being met.
The sufferer should try and keep their fears at a normal level; they should not talk about how unlikely it would be for them to recover or how much they expect to change in the future. Before starting the conversation, the sufferer might write down a list of things the partner has done to make them feel better, such as going on a day trip together or cooking dinner at home. They can then read this out loud if it helps to put things in perspective. The partner might then start with a similar list of things they have done for the sufferer. The most important thing they need to do now is to try to stay calm and clear when talking, whether about anxiety or anything else in the relationship.
