Foreword

Far too many Christian leaders have sacrificed their families in the name of building a successful ministry. But God established the home before He established the church. He called parents to bring up children in the faith before He called pastors to equip the saints.

Since the beginning of time, God has placed a high value upon the institution of the family. He has communicated to us in such a personal way, referring to Himself as our Father and calling us His children.

The Bible tells us that God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness (Gen. 1:26 ESV ). He told Adam, Eve, and their children that they were to have dominion over all of creation. He delighted in the formation of the family, and He proclaimed that it was good. He engineered the family as the nucleus of mankind, and He blessed both male and female with the ability to be fruitful and multiply (1:28). Simply put, God created us to flourish within the dynamic of family life. It was His idea from the start.

Unfortunately the family structure that was ordained by God has been the target of attack. Our enemy wants to keep every family from fulfilling Gods designed purpose of passing down a godly heritage. When he succeeds in that effort, serious damage is done to the faith of future generations.

The family is a living, breathing organism and has been established as the place in which Gods love, His Word, and His grace can be experienced in a tangible manner. Its where we learn submission, authority, compassion, discipline, and instruction. The home is where it all begins.

Henry Drummond once said that the family circle is the supreme conductor of Christianity. God is the One who created parents to be His instruments for molding and shaping another generation of believers. Yet many Christian parents struggle to become loving examples of Christianity in their homes. They fail to give themselves over to Gods purpose and plan, thus repeating the same negative cycles they saw in their own homes while growing up.

God said in Deuteronomy 5 that the sins of the guilty will impact their children (v. 9). But He went on to say that He will show loving-kindness to the descendants of those who love and obey Him (v. 10). Yes, the sins of the fathers continue on into future generations because of the impact of what those future generations have observed. But when the power of Gods glorious Word is introduced into a life, it breaks that destructive cycle. Jesus Christ and the gospel can transform a life. By Gods grace, He re-creates and restores a man or woman and places him or her back on the course He intended. There is nothing more encouraging for me than to see ruined lives dramatically changed and used mightily by God! That kind of turnaround in a life is nothing short of a miracle. And every changed life also means a changed family and changed future generations.

To anyone who is willing to make a change and break the cycle in his or her life, this book offers encouragement and hope. We all need to honestly look at the legacy we were given. We all need to turn around to embrace the good that God intends for us. And we all need to cast aside any destructive influences that were handed down to us from our parents so that those influences dont continue into the next generation. Unhealthy cycles can then be broken through faith in Jesus Christ and by following Gods will for the home. I know you will find hope and healing in the pages that follow as you take steps toward experiencing Gods unfailing love in your family.

Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa
