This book is dedicated to every woman who is hurting because of a difficult life event. My prayer for you all, loved ones, former clients, and strangers, is that you will know that neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will ever be able to separate you from the love of God. May these words from Romans 8:39 provide comfort and peace as you seek the root source of all healing: Jesus.

And to my mother, the strongest woman I know.

The Spirit of the Sovereign L ORD is on me, because the L ORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the L ORD s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zionto bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the L ORD for the display of his splendor.

    Isaiah 61:13

    CONTENTS
    Introduction
    Your Path toward Healing

You wake in the middle of the night feeling afraid. Maybe you cant even get to sleep at least not without the lights on.

You startle easily and cant shake the feeling that something bad is going to happen.

You worry. Youre sad. You feel guilty. You get so angry you cant think straight.

Youre trying hard to deal with it all, but your coping skills arent the best.

The worst part is, you may have no idea why you feel the way you do.

Everyone recognizes combat and sexual assaults as traumatic events that affect those who experience them, but what about other tough, life-altering events? No one gets through life unscathed. We all face stressful, overwhelming, even traumatic experiences. Can you be traumatized as a result of an ugly divorce? An abortion? A car accident? The simple and short answer to these questions is: yes . And dont let anyone tell you (including well-meaning pastors and mental health professionals) how you should feel or think after a bad experience. Instead, find those who are willing to come alongside of you in this journey back to peace and joy.

You should also seek help immediately if you:

    • feel you are coming apart
    • are no longer in control
    • are about to do something you may later regret
    • have a history of emotional disturbance
    • turn to alcohol, drugs, or other addictive substances
    • feel isolated with no one to turn to

If you are seeking a licensed mental health professional who offers Christian counseling, you can locate one at www.aacc.net
    /resources/find-a-counselor/.

Thankfully, most people who go through a traumatic experience dont develop post-traumatic stress disorder. This is good news! Of the less than 10 percent who do develop PTSD, effective, evidence-based treatment is available. However, many people unknowingly suffer as a result of a traumatic experience. Problems develop that disrupt our daily lives, our jobs, our relationships, and even our health.

What about those more hidden, private, but just as common events? Was your faith shaken when your child was diagnosed with mental illness? Maybe you experience lingering upsetting thoughts that disrupt your ability to concentrate or to leave the house, that bring on long crying spells from the loss of a loved one or from a miscarriage.
