Acknowledgements
There are so many people who have gone into the making of this book. To begin, I want to thank all of my clients, the people I have had the privilege of working with and who have taught me so much over the course of the years. Without them there would be no book, and my life would have taken a very different, and I am quite sure, a less fulfilling course.
Particular thanks are due to my editor, Jessi Hoffman, who worked so hard in ironing out incongruences and correcting my many errorsin thinking as well as in syntax. Without her valuable help this book would not have been nearly as cohesive or as readable as it is.
Though I thanked him while alive, I would again like to acknowledge and express my appreciation to the late Tom Brightmore for his helpful suggestions and comments on the early draft of this book. His logical mind and critical ability have made The Chi of Change more accessible and have undoubtedly improved its flow and coherence. Your flame shone brightly, Tom, and I thank you for the gift of your friendship.
Thanks are also due to my lifelong friend and companion Danielle Lalande, who has supported, encouraged, and believed in me for so many years, and who read the book through as it progressed in manuscript form, making many helpful suggestions. Her steadfast support and thoughtful feedback has added so much to my life, immeasurably enriching both it and this book.
I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Dr F. S. Starr for reading my book and generously writing such a perceptive and helpful foreword.
Last but far from least, I want to thank Xinqi Ren, my veritable right hand, for patiently supporting me throughout the writing of this book, as well as in life, and for providing me with all the encouragement a therapist, or a person, could possibly need.
Foreword
As a psychiatrist, it is hard to ignore the abysmal failure of the mental health system in its contemporary form. In so many ways it has become a self-obsessed industry overflowing with diagnoses, labels, and medications.
Sadly, mental health has evolved into an industry that is more and more detached from people and their environment, something clinically distanced from the individuals own unique life journey. Little wonder that, so often, our standard treatments simply end in failure.
In so much of psychiatry, as it is largely practiced today, there does not seem to be any emphasis on real and lasting changemerely on the treatment of symptoms. As doctors, we are confronted with an endless barrage of advertising designed to promote the newest medication, the latest chemical solution.
