To Neil,
for loving me through thick and thin.
I set out to lose weight to save my life. I never expected to be included in People magazines Half Their Size issue. It was such a thrill to be selected for that honor. Being super sensitive about having my picture taken was a big obstacle that I had to overcome before I could even imagine doing it.
I was astounded when I was contacted by the editors at People . I really thought it was a friend playing a joke on me. But it was real, and soon I was sending before and after photos to the editors and doing phone interviews. Then they told me theyd get back to me, so I figured that was the end of it. Much to my surprise, the call came in around Thanksgiving that I should be prepared to get to California in the first week of December (this was in 2013), because I was one of the five winners who would be featured in their biggest story in the Half Their Size issue, and I was going to be a centerfold model (OMG!?). And they were picking up the expense. Wow!
Off I went, not knowing what to expect. I had spent my career in advertising and marketing, so I was no stranger to a professional TV and photo shoot. Except this time I was in front of the camera and not giving direction from behind it. But there I was with my four new friends who were also in that issue: Kodi, Kate, Ginger, and Sheree. We all came from different parts of the country; we were of varying ages and ethnicities; and, on the surface, we could not have been a more diverse group. Yet, underneath, we shared the same battle and victory over our weight. I was the oldest, by far close to twice the age of the others.
The entire experience was magical.
We did the photoshoot at the former estate of celebrity Dinah Shore. We had a truly world-class photographer in Troy Word, who made us look (even more) beautiful. Google him and check out his work. The entire People team was absolutely wonderful.
We were sworn to secrecy and couldnt post any of the photos that had been shot that weekend in early December, so by the time the issue was released in early January, I was about to burst with anticipation. The magazine came out and it was on every newsstand in New York and everywhere else People is sold. It was crazy. We were on national TV shows, like Extra and Inside Edition , and also on local and national TV news. The issue was featured all over the world.
Its been a few years since the magazine came out. I still get a thrill when I think of that weekend when the issue came out and the recognition it brought to my message. I realized that the reason I was able to overcome my fear of having my picture taken wasnt because I was in the care of an ber professional hair stylist, makeup artist, and photographer; it was because I felt a responsibility to share my story with women all over the world. That was much more powerful to me than my fear of having my picture taken.
The number one question I get when women see the magazine and contact me or find out I was in it is How did you do it?!
This book is the answer.
M y goal is to teach you the tools you need to successfully manage your weight for your lifetime. You can live the life you deserve once you understand a few facts and are willing to face the truth.
