INTRODUCTION
Have you ever had the experience of knowing who was on the other end of the phone before you picked up? Do you sometimes know what someone is going to say before he or she says it? Do you ever know what someone is really feeling, even when he or she is trying to conceal it? Have you ever performed a small task and been told, I was just going to ask you to do that? Im sure you have, as in actuality, were all mind readers.
Throughout history, many people have recorded their psychic experiences. A large number of these involve mind-to-mind communicationpeople receiving the thoughts of others. A well-documented example of this happened to Bishop Samuel Wilberforce (18051873), a man who was famous for his opposition to Charles Darwins theory of evolution.
One day when Bishop Wilberforce was holding a meeting with a group of clergymen, he suddenly raised a hand to his head and said, I am certain that something has happened to one of my sons. Several people witnessed the experience as it occurred, and the bishop wrote down his feelings and fears about some evil happening to his son later that day. It was later discovered that at that very moment, his eldest son Herberts foot was badly crushed in an accident at sea.
Fortunately, the accident wasnt fatal. This is a fairly typical example of someone sending a telepathic message to a close friend or family member while in a moment of crisis or pain.
As a child, I used to stare at the back of the head of the boy sitting at the desk in front of me and will him to turn around. Invariably, within a minute or two, he would turn around with a puzzled expression on his face and look at me. Once Id succeeded with him, Id focus on someone else, and I would continue doing it until the lesson came to an end. Ive met several people over the years who used to do the same thing during dull classes. You may be one of them.
I wasnt aware that adults also amused themselves in a similar fashion until I read what J. B. Priestley (18941984), the English novelist, did at a boring poetry society dinner he attended in New York. He told the person sitting next to him, I propose to make one of those poets wink at me. He chose a serious-looking lady for the experiment. After concentrating for a minute or two, she suddenly turned around and winked at him. Later that evening, she apologized, saying, It was just a silly sudden impulse.
You can try this simple telepathic experiment anywhere you happen to be, as long as other people are present. Choose someone who is facing away from you, stare at him or her, and mentally will the person to turn around, touch his or her ear, or do some other simple action. If youre doing this in a place where people are relaxed and comfortable, it will probably take quite a few minutes for the person to react. However, in places where people feel less safe, such as a railway station or a dark street, youll find the person will react much more quickly. People who are naturally nervous will respond more quickly than people who are confident and feel in control of every type of situation.
You can also do this experiment in reverse. If you happen to be in a public place and sense that someone is looking at you, turn around as quickly as you can to see if someone is staring at you.
You read peoples minds all the time. You may not know that you are doing it, but you frequently know what other people are thinking without a word being spoken. Youre constantly receiving emotional and mental telepathic messages from others. Youre also sensing peoples thoughts and feelings from their body language and facial expressions.
Im sure you can tell if someone is happy, angry, tense, or sad with just a casual glance. You can tell if someone is nervous but is trying to conceal the fact. If you walk into a room shortly after two people have had an argument, you can feel the atmosphere, even if the people concerned are trying to act as if everything is going well.
Recently, after I gave a presentation to a large company, I went to thank the lady who had booked me. A man left her office as I arrived, and I walked straight in. The lady appeared bright and cheerful, but it was obvious the discussion shed had moments earlier had not been a pleasant one. She immediately opened the box of chocolates I gave her and visibly relaxed as she put one in her mouth. Although nothing was said about the earlier conversation, the tension in the air was obvious despite her attempts to behave normally.
