introduction
I didnt see my grandmother often when I was growing up, as she lived almost a thousand miles away. Consequently, when she came to visit, she often stayed for a few weeks. She was a stern, forbidding woman, but I remember a number of tender moments. One of these was her sitting on my bed when I was about five or six, teaching me childrens prayers and traditional rhymes. The one I remember best is this familiar prayer:
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,
Bless the bed that I lie on.
Four angels to my bed,
Four angels round my head.
One to watch, and one to pray,
And two to bear my soul away.
Fortunately, I didnt learn what the final line meant until many years later. This must have been the first time I heard about angels.
I attended a church school, and the only thing I learned about angels there was that they were Gods helpers who conveyed messages to and from God. Catholic friends who lived nearby occasionally mentioned their guardian angels. When I asked the chaplain at my school a question about them, he told me that children who went to the Catholic school down the road had guardian angels, but we didnt need them. I was in my twenties when I discovered that I not only had a guardian angel but also needed him. It took me many years to learn that there was much more to angels than that.
Other people discover angels when they see one for the first time or sense an angelic presence. A friend of mine lived in Japan for several years. One night he woke up and saw a small winged angel wearing a kimono. He wasnt religious and was surprised to see an angel.
My next-door neighbor has seen angels on several different occasions. She sees them as glowing, golden balls of light. She finds it comforting to see them, as they always appear at times when she needs help or has an important decision to make.
Many people experience the presence of an angel but dont realize it until later. A good example is an elderly woman who was traveling to see her grandchildren who lived a hundred miles away. It was winter, and she was finding it difficult to drive along snow-covered country roads. She found a place to park her car off the road and decided to wait until conditions improved before continuing on to her destination. She locked all the doors, lay down on the back seat, and tried to get to sleep. After about thirty minutes, she heard a gentle, but persistent, tapping on the windshield. She told me she was curious, and, unusual for her, unafraid. She opened the window slightly and called out to whoever or whatever it was.
A young man, dressed immaculately in a business suit, came up to the window and said hello to her. He said that he lived in a nearby farm house and had seen her park her car. As it was snowing and the temperature was dropping, hed come to see if he could offer any help.
You can stay at our farm overnight if you wish, he said. Or I could drive your car to your grandchildrens home.
