How to Stop Being a PeoplePleaser 2 nd Edition is a Mark 10 Bible study which uses practical examplesfrom the Bible to show you how to cure the disease to please. ThisChristian self help book will also help you stop being a doormat byhelping your understand your God given value.
Are your tired of suffering fromthe disease to please?
If you are, read the followingpassage and learn from Bartimaeus who was begging by the roadsidehow to kick this disease to the curb.
As Jesus left Jericho with hisdisciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the sonof Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging.
When he heard that it was Jesus ofNazareth Who was passing, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, sonof David, have mercy on me. Many people told him to hold his peacebut he cried all the more, Son of David, have mercy onme.
Jesus then stood still andcommanded him to be called. They called Bartimaeus and said to him,Be of good comfort, rise for he is calling you. Bartimaeuscasting away his garment, rose and came to Jesus.
Jesus then said unto him, What doyou want Me to do for you? The blind man said, Lord, that I mightreceive my sight.
Jesus replied, Go your way. Yourfaith has made you whole. And immediately he received his sightand followed Jesus. (Mark10:46-52)
Bartimaeus teaches that if youwant to cure the disease to please you must do thefollowing:
The first thing you have to do tostop being a people pleaser is to pray and ask Jesus to heal you ofthis disease to please.
Cry out to Him like Bartimaeus andask Him to restore your inner vision so that you can begin tobelieve and see yourself as worthy of more than being used as adoormat.
In addition, ask Jesus to restoreyou to wholeness if a sense of incompleteness makes you cravepublic approval so that you can feel good aboutyourself.
To do this you can pray thefollowing prayer,
Heavenly Father I ask You in thename of Jesus to Heal me and I shall behealed (Jeremiah 17:14) of this disease toplease. Father God I also ask you to Saveme and I shall be saved (Jeremiah 17:14)from craving for validation from others. Amen.
The second thing you have to do to stop being acompulsive people pleaser is to be a dedicated Jesus pleaser bycoming to Jesus the way Bartimaeus arose and went to Him
To do this, make a consciousdecision to turn away from your sinful ways and then say with yourmouth that Jesus isLord and believe in your heart that Godraised Him from the dead when He died for our sins and you will besaved. (Romans 10:9)
After getting saved, drop theheavy yoke of living to please people and put on the light oneof living just to please Jesus. To dothis, read your Bible so that you can know how He and our HeavenlyFather would like you to live and then do as They say in the Bibleand you will find the peaceful rest (Matthew 11:28-30) that publicapproval can never give you.
If you read something that Godwould like you to do, but you are scared of public censure, learnfrom Gideon and find a way of doing it even if it involves anextraordinary method. This is because when God asked him to teardown the altar to the false god Baal, Gideon took ten men and did as the Lord had told him to dobut because he feared his father's household and the men of thecity, he could not do it by day and so he did it at night. (Judges 6:27)
When Jesus called Bartimaeus, hecast away his garments and went to Him. Before Jesus called him,Bartimaeus was probably wearing clothes that identified him as ablind beggar. However when Jesus called him, he knew that wouldprobably not be his lot in life again.
This casting away of outergarments in the Bible signifies an inner transformation. Thereforeto be healed of this disease to please, you have to cast away allthose things that make you sit curbside begging for public approvalwhile being blind to your God-given approval.
This God-given approval comes whenyou give your life to Jesus as you have done in the above stepbecause There is therefore now nocondemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1)
So cast away this garment ofpublic approval that you have been covering yourself with so thatyou can stop feeling condemned because of the looks, words andactions of those people who do not approve of you.
To do this, replace any publicapproval seeking thoughts in your mind with Bible verses thatremind you of Gods approval like the following:
For you did not receive the spirit ofbondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption bywhom we cry out, Abba, Father. (Romans 8;15)
The Spirit Himself bears witness with ourspirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs -heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. (Romans 8:16-17)
You are no longer strangers andforeigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of thehousehold of God. (Ephesians 2:19)
Combine meditating on these Bible verseswith confessing them with your mouth and believing them with yourheart.
The next thing you have to do tostop being a people pleaser is to value your physical, emotional, mental, and financial well being.
In addition, you should not onlyvalue your well being, but you should also place more importance onit than on pleasing others so that when you are faced with thechoice of doing something that does not please those around you butis for your own good versus doing something that pleases them butis detrimental to your well being, you will choose the option thatis good for you.
To help you make the rightdecision always remind yourself that Barnabas would have remained ablind beggar if he had chosen to be a people pleaser and stoppedcalling out to Jesus when the crowd told to him to keepquiet.
