Jean Brick has been involved in the field of teaching and researching academic communication for over 25 years. She has worked in Australia, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Kiribati, Tonga, Sri Lanka and the Maldives with undergraduate and postgraduate students from both English-speaking and non-English-speaking backgrounds. Until her recent retirement, she taught in the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University, Sydney. Her research interests centre on academic communication, especially in the sciences, and the use of figurative language in history. She is the author of several books, including China: A Handbook in Intercultural Communication (2nd edition, 2004).
Maria Herke works as a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University. Her main research focus is communication strategies across a variety of professional contexts, including academic communication. Maria has presented her research at international conferences and has published numerous papers and a book. She teaches linguistics and academic writing to undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students.
Nick Wilson is currently a lecturer in linguistics at Macquarie University, but has previously worked in the UK at Cardiff University and the University of Manchester. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Edinburgh and his PhD at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. As well as having experience in learning and teaching at universities in several countries, Nick is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Nicks teaching and research are in the field of sociolinguistics and sport, and he is the co-author of An Introduction to Sociolinguistics (5th edition, 2017) with Janet Holmes.
Deanna Wong is a Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University where she teaches Academic Communication, with a focus on academic communication in the sciences, and Undergraduate Linguistics. Her research focuses on the spoken dimensions of human communication in spoken, online and academic contexts, using corpus linguistic methodologies. Along with Jean Brick and Maria Herke, she is a co-author of Academic Culture: A Students Guide to Studying at University (3rd edition, 2016).
