Introduction
The second edition of this book is for students who speak English as a second language and who are studying or planning to study a degree taught in English, either in their home country or overseas. The book focuses on strategies and skills that you can use and develop in order to succeed in your university studies.
The book is based on our own experiences as teachers and as students in various countries. All three of us have gone overseas for university study and know what it is like to study in a second language. We have also listened to the stories of university students who speak English as a second language and to their teachers. Their experiences and ours helped us to write this book.
Because this is a reference book, and because different chapters will be of interest at different times, you can turn to whatever section suits you. First have a look at the table of contents and see if a chapter fits your interest. If you dont find exactly what you want there, turn to the index. Here you can look up any topic you want to know more about such as note-taking or tutorials or homestay. Use the index for new words you hear everyone using at university such as faculty or discussion boards. The other place to look for word meanings is the glossary at the end of the book. This section is arranged like a small dictionary, giving you simple meanings of terms used throughout the book. If you want to know more about the meaning of any of these words, you can go back to the index to find the page where they are explained in more detail.
We hope that you find what you want somewhere in these pages. Although we have tried to give you the big picture, we know that there are differences from one university to another and from one country to another. For a more detailed picture you can read the books and websites suggested throughout the chapters. We hope that wherever you are reading this book and whatever stage of your university life you have reached, you will find the ideas helpful. Happy reading!
