Introduction
W hen it comes to your health, all doctors can agree that you need to eat right and exercise. Eating right is one part of the equation. You need to learn about carbs, calories, sugars, portions and much more. After you have this down you need to focus on the exercise portion of the equation. This is where many people get confused and start doing the wrong thing.
When people exercise they have the preconception that the faster they work out, the harder they work out and the more they do, the more results they will receive. Many people believe that cardio activity is the solution to everything.
Well, I am here to tell you that they are wrong. Yes, cardio exercise is important but it is not what gives you the best results. There is an old story called the Tortoise and the Hare. In this story, you have the hare who thinks that they can get to the finish line by running faster and farther than the tortoise. You can think of this as cardio. Then you have the tortoise who takes his time doing what needs to be done in order to get where it is going. This is strength training.
When you strength train you are conditioning your body for the long haul. You are setting the foundation in which you will build your muscles and tone your body. When you do cardio, you are working on losing the weight but that only remains effective for a short period of time. Soon you will burn yourself out before burning off the fat.
In this book, I will give you tips and tricks that you can use in order to use strength training more effectively than you have done in the past. If you have never strength trained before then this information will give you a head start on doing it right the first time. When it comes to your health, you need to take advantage of everything that you can. Follow this guide, and you will see results.
To your success, now lets get busy.
Chapter One: Exercise Fundamentals
W hen it comes to exercise, there are some basics and some fundamentals that you should be aware of. Please read through this chapter before starting any of the tips and tricks inside.
Consult a Doctor
T he first thing that you need to do before you go any further is to consult a doctor. When people decide to start exercising and trying to lose weight they do it without consulting a doctor or family physician. The reason to consult a doctor may not be clear too many people, and they overlook it since they feel healthy.
The main reason to consult a doctor is to ensure that there are no hidden dangers in starting to exercise. When you start exercising, you are starting to stress out different parts of your body that havent been worked out before. The main area you need to look at is your heart and lungs. When you exercise, you are making your heart and lungs work harder than they are accustomed to.
You want your doctor to check your lungs and your heart and make sure that nothing is wrong. Next you want to have your doctor do a complete physical on you. You want to tell him what medications you are taking and if there are any family conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or other factors that may make exercising dangerous.
Once you have completed your physical review the results with your doctor and went over any questions or concerns that either of you may have. Once you have a clean bill of health with your doctor, take the time to discuss your exercise plans and goals with him. Come up with an exercise plan that is both safe and effective.
Start Slow
W hen starting to exercise you want to start slow. Many people feel that if they start quickly they are doing more good than harm. In fact, they are doing the complete opposite. When you jump into exercise at full force, be it in a single session or over a long period of time you are setting yourself up to get hurt.
The first thing that may happen is that you will injure yourself. The number one problem with people who exercise is that they do too much too quickly and, as a result, are prone to or receive more injuries than those who exercise properly.
Stretch Your Muscles
W hen it comes to exercising, you need to first stretch your muscles. This is true whether you are walking, running, doing cardio or strength training. When you stretch before exercise, you are warming up the elasticity of the bones and the muscles. Also, when you stretch you are increasing the blood flow in your body preparing it to circulate through your body sending nutrients and oxygen through the entire body.
When stretching you want to take it easy as well. You dont want to pull a muscle or cause another form of damage. Start off slow, and your body will thank you for it. Rush into exercise and stretching, and you will be paying in pain.
Stop At the First Sign If Something Isnt Right
W hen exercising, warming up or cooling down you need to listen to your body. Each of our bodies has a built-in defense mechanism that will tell us when things are right or when they are not right. When we get this feeling a lot of us ignore it and just work through the pain. This is the worst thing that you can do.
When you have a sign that something is wrong stop what you are doing immediately and sit down. Begin to slow your breathing and let your heart rate return to normal. Once you are back to your regular body rhythms check yourself over to see what may be going wrong. If what feels wrong really concerns you seek medical attention immediately. No matter what happens though do not go back to exercising give your body a break it is asking you to.
Follow the Rules
W hen you follow these fundamental rules to exercise, you are setting yourself up for the most beneficial results you can achieve. If you fail to follow these rules, you are putting your health and your wellbeing in danger. So consult a doctor, take your time and allow your body to adjust to the new activities that you are subjecting it to.
Chapter Two: Diet Fundamentals
N ext to exercise diet is very important when it comes to overall health and wellbeing. When people exercise, they generally do it in order to lose weight. One thing that they also do is stop eating or eat the wrong things. When it comes to exercise and diet, you need to have them come hand and hand.
Food and Energy
How the body functions is that we take in food on a daily basis. This food is then broken down into its basic components and absorbed into the body through the digestive tract. When this process occurs, one of the two things will happen. First the body will use that food as energy, or it will store the food as fat for later conversion into fuel.
