Made of mud and wood, the hogan is a solid structurethe perfect place for Kiowa to hide. It is the strongest hut in the village, in fact, reserved for a person of honor. Kiowas uncle. The shaman.
What would Uncle think of his little sleeping wolf cowering here in the dark while the rest of the village watches the rite by fire outside? Kiowa is ashamed, but cannot understand why he alone is afraid. He saw the villagers gather around Uncle earlier, and not one seemed to notice the sounds surrounding them this night. Did they not hear the howling? Do they not hear it getting closer now?
Only the sound of Uncles chanting rises above the din. Kiowa can hear none of the villagers out there. Their silence may be due to sheer awe of the mysteries, or simply respect. None had asked Uncle what was so important when they came to the fire. It was habit for the village to gather when summoned, and to remain in attention as long as they were required.
Outside, Uncles chant reaches a peak, and stops. The howling ceases.
Kiowa feels himself breathe for the first time in seconds. Another breath. A third.
Then something lands on the hogan s domed surface. Something big. The walls shake from the impact.
Kiowa falls against the wall, out of his crouch. He tries to listen, to understand what is happening above. A renewed burst of chanting erupts outside.
Kiowa waits. Softer pounding moves above him. The thing seems to be creeping up overhead to the center of the roof. Is it moving to the hogans fire opening?
Faster chanting outside now. Should he try to run to Uncle and the crowd? Should he try to get away from the thing on the roof? To do so, hed have to be able to move first, to overcome the electric fear that numbs his muscles.
Kiowa hears breathing coming from the fire opening. Heavy and raspy, the sound drowns out the chanting that is becoming even more frenzied. The breathing seems to not only come through the opening but to move around him, dragging across his skin like disturbed cobwebs.
A single, booming howl vibrates the hogan , and Kiowa starts to scream.
Little sleeping wolf wishes this were a dream.
A long, furry snout appears, and starts to make its way down through the opening above...
The preceding scene is a dramatization of a Navajo legend you may not be familiar witha werewolf legend. It certainly doesnt sound like a scene from a typical werewolf movie or novel, does it? Actually, that unfamiliarity makes this legend typical in the world of werewolf folklore. Most of the legends from around the world surrounding werewolves or man-wolves bear little resemblance to the cinematic tortured souls who try to lock themselves in their rooms each full moon. Werewolves and other shapeshifters of folklore are as diverse as the cultures that believe in them. And these cultures are many; alleged true tales of werewolves seem to be almost everywhere.
Bringing us to what is perhaps the grand dichotomy of supernatural research:
Finding that a belief in something is shared around the world seems to imply it is true... yet finding contradictions in said beliefs details makes it hard to accept the mystery at hand.
As well explore in the pages that follow, sometimes you need to look beyond the surface of legends to find potential commonalities. Rather than getting distracted by which nights a person can change into a wolf according to which people, we can look for possible hidden or occult truths that may explain why people from different lands have all come up with the same fantastic belief.
With that said, we can ask this books core question: Are werewolves real?
Both the evidence you find in these pages and the conclusions you draw afterward may surprise you.
