MANY YEARS AGO, AS I was finishing my training as a cardiologist in New York, I became very sick. I visited three specialists, got tons of medical tests, and was given three different diagnoses, followed by seven prescriptions for medication. I was told I would need them all in order to function. But the drugs did not take care of the underlying problem. Their only purpose was to silence my symptoms.
Even though I had been trained to treat my patients in exactly this way, being on the patient side of things changed my perspective, and all those prescriptions didnt make sense to me. I decided to find a different solutiona drug-free solution. I found my way back, not only to vibrant health but also to looking and feeling ten years younger, through cleansing and detoxification.
During this journey, I met some remarkable people who taught me a lot. Tracy Piper is up there with the best of my newfound friends. Her vast knowledge, experience, and compassionate bedside manner, along with her hurricane-strong shamanic spirit, helped me to heal. I wish someone had given me her book back in the days when I was so sick. It would have saved me a lot of time and money as I searched desperately for a solution to my health issues. Because the truth is that the path to health is much simpler than many doctors will lead you to believe.
I highly recommend her book to anyone who wants to get and stay healthy, or help others do the same.
With much love and respect,

NO PHYSICIAN CAN HEAL thyself. It is hard to admit we as doctors need help sometimes. As someone who is both a doctor and a person who suffers from celiac disease, hypothyroidism, and other immune disorders, I was one of those doctor-patients who needed help from other healthcare practitioners, because despite the fact that I knew a lot about disease and its conventional and integrative treatments, I needed someone to step in and help me heal.
During my leadership at the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine in early 1999, I became familiar with colon hydrotherapy. I was intrigued by this procedure and its reported effectiveness in the treatment of many bowel conditions. Some of these bowel conditions are associated with systemic disease, and I thought this therapy might help me. I inquired within my network of colleagues, and thats when I found Tracy Piper.
After visiting her and then referring patients to her, it was my turn to try the process for myself, to see if it could do something for my sick colon. I completed a series of colonics with great ease and no distress, and for the first time in decades, my colon began to heal. I was impressed. Tracy and I began to work together. Combining our knowledge, we have been able to increase and restore internal fitness, not just to me but to countless others. Of course, a new dietary and exercise lifestyle has been of great importance, as well. Tracy and I spent countless hours at conferences discussing different remedies and approaches, and it is with great admiration that I recommend this book, as a handbook for the future of internal fitness. I believe her approach will soon become an integral part of mainstream medicine.
But it can become a handbook for you today. Internal fitness is essential for everyone. You cannot be externally fit unless you are internally fit. The gut, or the digestive system, is the gateway to all disease, so you must take good care of it. More than 70 percent of Americans are affected with diseases of the digestive system, such as colitis, constipation, irritable bowel disease, candida, and unexplained weight gain or weight loss, not to mention autoimmune conditions like celiac disease and the epidemic of obesity in our culture. As Tracy so clearly states, without internal fitness, we would not be healthy. There are some of you that suffer from eczema, brain fog, decreased glandular function, urinary tract infections, and thin, weak hair. All of these are directly caused by an ineffective cleansing of your colon. A toxic environment, a Westernized diet (with too many processed foods), daily stress, and poor lifestyle choices are the major causes of the digestive disease epidemic.
Since our patients seek our guidance and expertise in overseeing their healthcare, this book is long overdue. In fact, it is one of the best cleansing books ever written that frankly and directly addresses colon cleansing with candor and honesty. It also clearly explains and helps the reader to implement many other health strategies that I myself recommend and utilize. These practices are no longer fringe. There is a body of experiential strategies and evidence-based literature to support the utilization of these integrative strategies in healthcare.
Although I was not born in St. Thomas nor have I lived in Tortola and although I have never met Tracys Granny, I can relate to her personal journey. As her Granny gave her cod liver oil every day, my Nanny made sure I, too, had my daily spoonful of cod liver oil before I left for school. Different cultures and different people share one common denominator: Earth Mothers many remedies for sickness and tools for healing. Let Tracy Piper be your translator.
The Piper Protocol will take you on a journey. It might well be a journey you never thought you would venture into, but it is a journey that will change you for the better. I ask you to challenge yourself with this educational, inspirational, and compelling book about self healing and internal fitness. I feel privileged to have been part of Tracys journey, and I know how privileged she feels to be part of yours.

THIS BOOK WILL TAKE you on a journey. It will take you from wherever you are now to a cleaner, purer, more vibrant, and more alive place, where you will feel better than you do right now. It is about cleansing your inside and your outsideyour body, mind, and spirit. But it is also about more than cleansing. It is about living by freeing yourself from the behaviors and influences that keep you from being as healthy, radiant, and fit as you can possibly be.
Theres no more important or basic level of fitness than what is inside you, at your very center. All other fitness and all health begin with digestion; without regular maintenance, your body wont work as well as it could and should. No matter how experienced or inexperienced you are at cleansing, theres always more to do, as the body constantly transforms food into flesh and processes the detritus of living so it doesnt harm you.
In this book, Ill take you through your own body and show you exactly whats happening, where things can go wrong, and what you can do about it. Well begin by covering the mechanisms of the body, how your body cleanses naturally, and how you can help this process, and then Ill show you what I show my celebrity clients every day: How to make your body, your mind, and your spirit feel better, look better, and behave better on every level. Ill show you how to be not just more beautiful on the outside but, much more important, more internally fitbecause that is where beauty begins.
