Briefing

Dear Friends,

Encased within a safe spiritual environment, we often think we can do anything and go anywhere. Don and I had finished what we considered to be our graduate school.

The hot weather was unbearable to my northern bloodwith no air conditioning and at least one month of one-hundred-degree weather. There was a climate shock and a culture shock as well.

My center-rest was off center and I was sure we made a mistake. My misery developed into resistance, loneliness, and inner suffering.

God will not leave us to the will of our enemy, even if we are the enemy. So I returned to my Center. At the core of my being I heard what I already knew, For me to live is Christ (Philippians 1:21). When I stopped resisting, my tears stopped flowing and my pining for the familiar was over. Then God started acting just like Himself, bringing in the people and making them radical for Christ.

Every step was faith in action. You will love seeing Him prove Himself in marvelous ways when I stopped resisting my unfamiliar circumstances. There is no place where God is not.

In Texas we learned that faith will work anywhere. We became happy campers and fans of Davy Crockett.

You will want to have your Kleenex ready so you can cry with me through the first month.

Love,

Ruth Ann

The Hottest Journey on Record

Dear Friends,

Having been in the school of faith for five years, we were now traveling to our land of promise. It was time to take faith to a hard placeto put it to work. It was something like a shuttle launch at Cape Canaveral. Theres a launching time for the faith life and theres no graduation; only in heaven will you receive your diploma. We were counting on a San Antonio anointing.

After the brook dried up, God commanded a widow to sustain Elijah (1 Kings 17:9). Perhaps Elijah wished she was a rich widow.

We wondered if God had commanded anyone to sustain us. God has many ways to sustain His prophets besides ravens and a widow. Dont get stuck on the messenger; keep your eyes on the Source. Messengers are temporary.

The poor widow had two sticks in hand and a little oil and meal. (Faith and protocol dont always work together.) Elijah asked for her last cake, promising they would have a daily supply.

Though God didnt fill the barrel all at once, there was enough in the barrel to feed them a day at a time. That is His lure to always keep us looking unto Jesus (Hebrews 12:2). If faith is not kept alive we could be planning our own funeral.

And then what? The widows son died. At first she was mad at Elijah and wondered if he was for real; she expected better treatment for her care of him. Did the prophet know something about her past? Some prophets are like that, so you try to keep them at a distance; if it goes contrary, you tell them its their fault (1 Kings 17:18).

But Elijah still held the rainless skies in his fist, so what is this bump in the road? He responded to death and carried the childs lifeless form to his own chamber. It was not a quick fix; Elijah laid on the problem of death until it sneezed seven times. Life was on the way. When the son was over his sneezing spell, Elijah took him, fully alive, to his mother. This was her response: Now by this I know that thou art a man of God and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth (1 Kings 17:24).

Beyond meeting the needs of daily bread, Elijah had given full proof of his ministry. We all need proof that we know the Living God. Nothing makes a believer like receiving a dead child back to life. Dont be weary of laying on your problem. First the seven sneezes, and then life!

My father was the loudest sneezer in our area. He could be heard at least a half mile back in the apple orchard. After he sneezed we knew exactly where to find him. Follow the sneeze. FATHER is working there.

Our Chevy was bumping along, pulling a fifteen-foot trailer. It would be our guest bedroom. The deeper south we traveled, the more we shed unnecessary clothes (then the necessary ones). Our car had no air conditioning. All four windows were openletting in hot, steamy air. Our conversation had diminished to, Im so hot! and, Are we there yet? Our thick, northern blood was trapped. My flesh crieth out (Psalm 84:2) took on a whole new meaning. My flesh was hot!

We finally saw an oasisa creek of water beside the highway. We jumped in with clothes on. All was well until Don turned green and up came what he had eaten for several days. We had no car-sick bags. After he was cleaned out, we saw San Antonio signs. Don was still pale from food going the wrong direction. If theres a reception, the first impression wont be good.

Near dusk, we pulled into our new church and parsonage on Hildebrand. Our reception was Joe and Bethel Sawyer, our dear friends, driving out of the driveway to Houston to start a new church. Good souls they were! They would have eaten bark for Jesus. One plants, another waters and builds, but God gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6).

Bethel died early with cancer. It was heartbreaking for all of us. But God, rich in mercy, had a Lois in the wings. Several years later God brought a lovely, gifted wife to Joe. Her circumstances had been his. They have been very fruitful ministers. They are our forever friends.
