Chapter 1: Dont Stay Stuck

The very first thing that you have to keep in mind when it comes to enhancing willpower is basically not to allow yourself to get stuck.

The problem with some people is that when they feel unmotivated, they just let themselves be unmotivated. When they feel like they wont be able to get what they want the way most people do, they just tell themselves that life isnt fairand you know what? This way of thinking would get you nowhere!

While it is true that there are some times in life when you couldnt help but feel down, and while you could embrace that sadness sometimes, you should never allow it to take over your life.

In sports, some coaches often reiterate the difference between comfort and stretch zones. In short, there are times when you do have to push yourself to go beyond where you are to get to where you want to be. So, at times when you feel stuck, ask yourself this: Is this all there is? Is this really where you want to be, and is this all youre supposed to be?

The answer, of course, is no. You can stay sad, but dont mope. Remind yourself that things will get betterbut only if you work hard for it.


Chapter 2: Start by Imagining

One of the fastest ways to improve willpower is by making use of your imagination.

A study done by John Tierney and Roy Baumeiser, two renowned willpower experts, shows that a person responds not only to experienced situations, but also to imagined ones.

For example, you want to be an author. Youve always wanted to be one, and yet, you have no idea where to start. Well, why dont you imagine how it would feel like when youre finally an author? Imagine that youve finally published your very first novel, and that youre now trying to market it. Heck, maybe even go all the way and create a mock cover for ityoull be surprised at how much this will make you feel better!

You see, the key here is to put yourself in the shoes of the person youve always wanted to become so that youll be pushed to get there. And while youre at it, go and create a vision board that will help you understand what youve always wanted to becomelearn more about this in Chapter 3!


Chapter 3: Create a Vision Board

A Vision board helps you get a clearer vision for your future. Think of it as an inspiration board. Think of it as something that could drive you where you want to go, and make sure to put it up where you could see it every day (such as in your office cubicle wall, or in the wall of your room)and make sure to look at it and know that one day, those things in your board? Theyll be yours, too! Youll experience thembut only if you work hard!

Here are some tips to create effective vision boards.

  1. Tear images from magazines you have at hand. These should be images or words that catch your fancy and that invoke something inside you that makes you want to do more!
  2. Lay your favorite images on the board, and just get as creative as you can. Or, you can also make segments on the board that are based on themes such as Places I Want to Visit, Dreams I Want to Achieve, People I Want to Meet , etc. Or, cut out photos of celebrities or famous people who are your life pegswhat matters is that you choose photos that you know have a space in your heart and can push you to do better!
  3. On the center of the board, you can also add a photo of yourselfa really happy, smiling, or even laughing photo of yourself. This will create the effect that you are happyand that someday, your heart will be full of joy because whatever is in your vision board has come true!

Chapter 4: Develop Realistic Goals

It is okay to dream bigbut you also have to remind yourself that sometimes, its best to start small. This means that you have to set goals that you know could easily be achieved, so that youd be able to realize that hey, if you can make these goals happen, you can make the bigger ones come true, as well. And this way, your willpower would be developed, and your passion would not be dampened.

In short, its best to create SMART goals, which means:

  1. You have to think of something specific. Instead of saying I want to lose weight, say I want to lose 30 pounds in 3 months see the difference?
  2. They have to be measurable . For example, if you want to post OOTDs on your Instagram, you have to invest in clothes. Or, if you want to open up a restaurant, you do have to be skilled in cooking. You cant say you will be an astronaut if youre not studying to be one, right?
  3. Make sure theyre achievable. Again, start with the small ones. For example, if you want to study law, read up on how youd get into law schooland start saving up for it.
  4. Make them realistic. Lets go back to the example of going in law school. Are you actually interested about law? Do you have the patience and the drive that lawyers have? Sometimes, you have to reassess your dreamsespecially if theyve been around for far too long.
