Overview: Just where does fiction begin and fact end in the new movie Exodus: Gods and Kings? The provocative mix of fact and fiction in Ridley Scotts film Exodus: Gods and Kings raises interesting questions regarding the origins and actuality of the Exodus led by Moses. Scott and selected writers are avowed atheists who attempt a retelling of the biblical story of Moses and the Exodus. As non-believers, they take numerous liberties with the story as they intend to recast one of the foundational narratives of Judeo-Christian civilization. Some viewers may come away from the movie questioning their beliefs, wondering what is true. Questions like: Was the Red Sea really parted? Was Moses actually used by God to perform miracles to lead the people out of Egypt? Questions like these may arise when people watch atheist Ridley Scotts Exodus: Gods and Kings.

If this book had not been the book of God, men would have destroyed it long ago. Emperors and popes, kings and priests, princes and rulers have all tried their hand at it; they have all died and yet this book lives on (H.L. Hastings on the Bible).

Introduction

And it must follow, as the night the day, you canst not then be false to any man (William Shakespeare).

3000 years later, its still one of the more contentious stories in our world: Did Mosesthe leader of Israelreally lead his people out of Egypt? Or is it better that one accept it by blind faith?

Does reviewing Scripture and the discoveries of biblical archaeology, those involved in the finding historical truth, weaken what is better left untouched as Jewish and Christian dogma?

Skeptics have arisen to contest the historicity of the Exodus.

Atheist Ridley Scott has released a big-budget movie that challenges the truth of the Exodus from Egypt. That means his faulty presuppositions, his misjudgments, and his fallacies are unsheathed to strike at the life of Moses, the miracles, and the journey out of Egypt. It means unbelief, irrationality and, of course, his anti-biblical bias will be on full display as he fictionalizes aspects of the Book of Exodus.

Scott opined, "You can't just do a giant parting, with walls of water trembling while people ride between them. I didn't believe it then, when I was just a kid sitting in the third row. I remember that feeling, and thought that I'd better come up with a more scientific or natural explanation. " But, while the atheist Scott has never seen a book of Scripture hold up to his highly prejudiced criticisms, that doesnt mean truth is not residing within the biblical text.

The biggest source of evil is of course religion (Ridley Scott).

There are some undisputed realities about the reliability of the Bible; Scripture bears the imprint of divinitydivine traits and characteristics that set it apart. Scripture is self-testifying truthseen by all believers. The books of the Bible have internal self-authenticating features within their pages. Billions of people profess that it is Gods word.

Hollywood Star Christian Bale Insults Moses

Moses was the greatest man who ever lived (Philo).

Mr. Scotts Moses (Christian Bale) is a 21st-century skeptic who, instead of becoming the instrument of God in freeing the Israelites from Egyptian bondage, sits back and calls God cruel and inhumane for visiting plagues upon Egypt (Charlotte Allen).

Christian Bale, the star of the new movie Exodus: Gods and Kings, calls Moses barbaric and schizophrenic. Yet, nowhere have I read of his admitting to rigid naturalistic assumptions in his analysis. Similarly, Scott doesnt refer to his atheistic foundation which yields strict naturalistic assumptions. These assumptions, in turn, guide his textual assessments. Now, he has begun misinterpreting the story of Moses. Thus, in the cinema, his jaundiced work has taken on a life of its own. Scott may loathe God; Bale may insult Moses; however, none of their slurs take away any of the divine luster from the Exodus story.

John Conner vs. Moses? Its no contest. Moses wrote five books of Scripture, Bale puts on makeup and pretends to be other people.

Past Assaults on the Bible

I scarcely remember the significance of the impious The Last Temptation of Christ in the 1980s when I was a young Christian. Anyway, the media pushed the wonder of the esoteric retelling of the life of Christ, but its impact on Christianity was a strained exaggeration to popularize liberal views of Scripture. It faded into the background and no one noticed.

Later, while scrutinizing skeptical books, I was thrilled to discover each of their hypercritical ideas lacked a coherent foundation and were reinforced with little evidence. Likewise, the dusty writings of cynical archaeologists are really not true. Conservative biblical scholars have answered minimalist contentions as easily as prior scholars disposed of the puerile ideas of The Da Vinci Code . Moreover, as a motivational force, Christian apologists are better off having Scott and Bale crank out anti-biblical filmsthey make exposing error much easier.

A Firm Underpinning is Essential

Every view of the Book of Exodus produced from analysis needs a foundation to support it.

In my search for truth, after surveying anti-biblical worldviews, I discovered that each lack a foundation that can provide the necessary preconditions for analysis, including archaeological and textual analysis. I thought I stumbled upon a silver bullet. My first notice of the silver bulletthe one that refuted hypercritical scholarshipgave me both intellectual satisfaction and great delight. But that wasnt the only occasion I've enjoyed such a sensation. It also occurred when other historical and linguistic bullets were uncoveredEgyptian words intermingled within the Hebraic language structure of the text pointed to the historicity of Scripture.

I felt excitement when I originally read the archaeological discoveries relating to the characters in the Bible, including Moses, David, Pilate, Caiaphas, John the Baptist, and other important people in Gods word.

Scripture reveals authentic historical events inspired by Godevents of redemptive and ethical significance for all humanity. A little pondering of intellectual foundations and exploration of the historical evidence regarding the Exodus will give the believer deep satisfaction and great enjoymentdisplaying such is the primary objective of this volume.

Yes, God used Moses to lead His people out of bondage and into the Promised Land. People who embrace God find that life itself becomes more joyful and satisfyingand they grow wiser and more courageous. They know God saves His people! So let us take a thorough look at the Exodus as a true story that helped shape Western civilization.

Note

  1. Ridley Scott said: But I didnt like the idea of an angel associated with wings. I wanted everything to be reality based. The writer I chose to finally polish it said, You couldnt have asked a worse person to do this because I am a dyed in the wool atheist. I simply dont believe in this stuff. I said, Well, on the contrary, its a bit like being in science fiction. Cause I never believed in it, I had to convince myself every step of the way as to what did make sense and what didnt make sense and where I could reject and accept. So I was immediately thinking that all science-based elements placed come from natural order or disorderor could come from the hand of God, however you want to play that. Any liberties I may have taken in terms of how I show this stuff was, I think, pretty safe ground because Im always going always from what is the basis of reality, never fantasy. So the film had to be as real as I could make it.
  2. This includes ultimate rational commitments and unexamined presuppositions. What is needed is a first principle that has the ontological endowment not only to ground analysis, but to account for it and its preconditions. Because of futile mindsets, men attempt to build their analytical enterprise without an ontological ground that has the capacity to carry the required epistemic load. The loss of the immovable point of reference, in principle, leaves the ungodly wanting of a resource necessary to construct the critical and analytical enterprise. Without God, one cannot hoist the necessary a priori operation features of analysis.
