Foreword
After Lawrence Stenhouse's death in 1982 a Memorial Appeal was set up by William Etherington, Dean of the School of Education at the University of East Anglia where Stenhouse was Professor of Education and Director of CARE (the Centre for Applied Research in Education). The first event that the Appeal supportedsomething that Lawrence Stenhouse had requested before he diedwas a workshop that brought together teachers and doctors to look at the way in which illness and death might be handled in schools. Jane Abercrombie was a key speaker and a local group of drama teachers presented incidents for discussion.
The next Dean, Hugh Sockett, established a Memorial Trust Committee which decided to sponsor some lectures in Stenhouse's name. The first two were given informally to staff and students at CARE by Malcolm Skilbeck and Jean Rudduck. In 1988, Geoffrey Brown, the then Dean and Chair of the Memorial Committee discussed with the British Educational Research Association (BERA) the possibility that the lectures should be given at the annual BERA conferences which are usually held in early Septembercoincidentally, the time of year when Lawrence Stenhouse died.
The first BERA Memorial Lecture was given by John Elliott at the 1988 BERA conference which was held at the University of East Anglia. The following year the conference took place at the University of Newcastle and Stephen Kemmis gave the lecture. In 1990 Brian Simon was the speaker and BERA met that year at the Roehampton Institute, London. The next lecturer was Tony Edwards, who spoke at the conference held at what was then Trent Polytechnic. In 1992, the tenth anniversary of Lawrence Stenhouse's death, BERA met in Scotland, at the University of Stirling, and Donald McIntyre gave the lecture. (In this collection, the papers are not reproduced in the order in which they were given.)
