Railroad Postcards in the Age of Steam: summary, description and annotation

Out of the tradition of those long-gone days of great, heaving steam locomotives and endless rail lines comes this remarkable selection of vintage cards, a treasure trove selected from John Vander Maas consummate collection at the University of Iowa Libraries. This lavish volume is the first general book-length work devoted to the once-ubiquitous railroad picture postcard. It comprises an introductory essay and an album of cards. The former fully examines the nature of the postcard craze, which reached its zenith about 1910, and discusses why images of American railroads played such an important part in the card phenomenon. The album divides an engaging assortment of more than 150 representative views into five sections: Trains and Rolling Stock, Depots and Railway Structures, The Railroad Corridor, People and Railroads, and The Lighter Side of Railroading. Railroad historians, train enthusiasts, postcard collectors, and all other readers will find much to interest them in this selection of images. Not only are the cards themselves visually striking, but they convey a sense of how important railroads once were to the nations citizenry. The sight of steaming locomotives and the hustle and bustle associated with train time caused hearts to quicken. These feelings made views of railroad scenes popular with buyers of postcards and now with latter-day railroad fans and card collectors.

While the idea for a book on the picture postcard during the golden years of American railroading appealed to me, I did not develop it independently. John Vander Maas, who assembled the massive collection of view cards from which this album has been selected, and Paul Zimmer, director of the University of Iowa Press, encouraged me. Needless to say, I am indebted to both men.
I also received additional help. George Miller, professor of English at the University of Delaware and a leading authority on picture postcards, gave guidance. Boris Blick, a retired colleague from the University of Akron and a card collector, critiqued my essay. Similarly, George N. Johnson, Jr., a resident of Lexington, Virginia, and a postcard dealer, brought several important aspects of the postcard craze to my attention. And Robert A. McCown and the staff of the Special Collections Department at the University of Iowa Libraries handled effectively the copying of the cards from the Vander Maas collection.
Then there was my grandmother, Katharine Beerkle Dinsmore, who did much to stimulate my general interest in the past, including postcards. I vividly recall her large, green postcard album that contained wonderful views of midwestern places. Grandmother's cards from Hiteman, Iowa, a ghost town near my home community of Albia, especially intrigued me. This coal mining camp, which in 1910 sported a population of about 3,000 residents, was the loca-

tion of my grandfather's drugstore. The sign on the false-front facade, "H.A. Dinsmore Drugs," captured on a real-photo card, made a lasting impression. Also memorable was the presence of the tiny Albia Interurban Railway in Hiteman. There were view cards of the modest interurban station and the company's several electric cars. That much-examined album also contained scenes of the coal miners' trains and the busy and multiple sites of the Wapello Coal Company, all of which fascinated me.
As with other books, my wife, Martha Farrington Grant, assisted me with this project. Although she is hardly a railroad enthusiast, she appreciates the picture postcards that once were so important to Americans.
