Introduction
Marnie giggled, then took another long drag of the joint that was being passed around. She closed her eyes, feeling the drug take effect. Everything was slow and relaxed. Her parents' divorce, her breakup with Max, the fight with her mother that morning like the one they had every morningall of that seemed miles away.
Marnie's friend Jade had introduced her to pot a few months ago, over winter break. Marnie had been really nervous at first, but after smoking a few times, she had begun to look forward to using it. Now she was getting stoned almost every day. She was falling behind in her classes, and sometimes she had to steal from her mother's wallet to pay for the drugs, but Marnie didn't care.

When Darnell joined the track team in ninth grade, he had high hopes of following in his brother Jared's footsteps. Jared had been the top athlete on the team and last year had won a track scholarship to go to a local college.
At the end of his first season, however, Darnell's times were still just averageand way below Jared's. Darnell decided to go on a rigorous diet and training schedule, eating only raw vegetables and plain rice and running five to six miles a day. When his mother finally brought him to a doctor several months later, Darnell had lost almost forty pounds.
The doctor sent him to a psychiatrist, who diagnosed Darnell with anorexia. She prescribed Prozac, an antidepressant medication that would help Darnell both with his eating disorder and with some of the other problems he was having. After six months of medication and therapy, Darnell was eating regularly and was able to express some of his frustrations through words instead of self-destructive behavior.
