Introduction

This book is aimed at model engineers and anyone else whohas a home engineering workshop. It is my attempt to provide a guidebook thatwould have helped me find my way through my first five or so years of thehobby, in the hope that it can do the same for others.

Writers in the model and hobby engineering press cant beexpected to define every technical term they use. It would be boring andrepetitive, and waste a lot of paper. It is also fair for them to assume adegree of knowledge on behalf of the reader. But when I was a new recruits tothe hobby I often found myself confounded by some term that turned out to havea straightforward meaning. At other times I could see that words had a precisetechnical definition beyond their day to day use, and I wanted to know what itwas. Increasingly, younger people are taking up the hobby and the explanationof some terms used in older writings may be useful. There are many excellentbooks on model engineering, and though some of these have excellent indexes, few have a glossary and none collects useful definitions of terms associatedwith the hobby. So to address this, over the last five years, on and off, Ihave been compiling this dictionary.

This book is not intended as a workshop handbook, so it isnot full of tables and has only a few important formulas. Nevertheless, I havetried to pass on some of the hints and tips that I have picked up from othermodel engineers, and to reinforce a few messages of good practice that may beparticularly useful to novices.

The field of home shop engineering, as it is called in theUSA, is a vast one and this short book is really only a beginning. I am surethat any reader will be able to suggest many words and phrases that have beenmissed out, and no doubt will suggest others that should have been omitted. Ihave done my best to check my definitions, but anything that attempts to becomprehensive will contain some errors. These are my own, but if you find one pleaselet me know.

A Few Notes

In this dictionary, small distances are often quoted to thenearest thou (0.001). The precise metric equivalent is 0.0254mm, but this isexcessive precision to use when the purpose is to give a general impression ofthe relative size of small distances. Depending on the context and the need foraccuracy, I have used both 0.02mm and 0.025mm as a metric thou.

Within dictionary entries I have cross not cross-referencedevery word that appears elsewhere. Words that may be unfamiliar or are used ina specific context that have their own definitions are in italics, as are wordsunder which further relevant information may be found.

Where a word has several forms (asymmetric, asymmetrically)it is only listed under one form, thought either may be highlighted in bold inreference to the entry.

Sometimes, for clarity, I have added extra words in bracketsafter an entry. I hope these make sense in their context.

1- 9
1-2-3 Blocks

A simple fixture that assists in setting up and laying out, consisting of a rectangular block with faces in the ratio 1:2:3. Inchdimensions make a convenient size. The blocks are usually drilled to allowflexibility in clamping and use as packing.

220M07

Modern designation for the general-purpose mild steel EN1A.

3-way toolpost

See Lammas toolpost.

4-way toolpost

See four-way toolpost.

5C Collet

A collet system based around a self-releasing taper. Unlikemost systems, 5C collets may either be drawn into the taper by a normaldrawbar, a special large tubular internally threaded drawbar, or may be held inplace by a nosepiece. 5C collets are normally used for workholding, not holdingcutters. As well round stock collets for hexagonal and square stock may beobtained, as well as stepped collets for work larger than a standard collet.Soft unbored collets that may opened out to a non-standard size are alsoavailable. One feature of 5C collets is that various holders are available thatcan be used in place of machine vices, holding work sideways or on end. 5Cfixtures with square or hexagonal bodies may be used to perform simple indexing

For example, a hexagon fixture facilitates the rapid millingof hex flats on round work.

A
A

Symbol for the unit of electrical current, an ampere.

Acid

A compound which releases free hydrogen ions when insolution. Acids attack more reactive metals, releasing free hydrogen anddissolving the metal as a salt.

Acme (thread form)

A thread with sloping, flat-sides and broad, flat creststhat is very strong in tension and compression. It is commonly encountered onlead screws on machine tools and vices.

Acorn nut

A blind nut with a decorative finial on top. Acorn nuts havea practical application when the end of a thread needs to be protected orsealed.

Acute

Sharp; angled by less than a right angle (90) the oppositeof obtuse.

Adaptor

A device allowing objects with different fittingarrangements to be used together.

Addendum

The height of the teeth of a gear above its pitch circle. For gears to mesh accurately the addendum must be less than the dedendum (thedepth below the pitch circle) by an amount known as the tooth clearance.

Adhesive

A substance used to permanently or temporarily join twosurfaces by chemical or molecular adhesion.

Adiabatic

A system which does not lose or gain heat. In an adiabaticsystem the gas law can be assumed to apply perfectly. A concept used intheoretical calculations of the behaviour of gases. It is useful for internalcombustion engines, for example, but not for steam engines where phase changesbetween vapour and liquid involve major heat transfers.

Adjustable die

A thread forming cutter with a slot allowing it to beslightly closed or opened up in a diestock to achieve accurate sizing of thethread (contrast with a dienut). The teeth of a die are relieved so that thefirst few teeth do not cut to full depth. Sometimes dies are relieved on bothsides, but normally the side stamped with the size of the die is fullyrelieved, the other only partially. This can be used to advantage when a threadright up to a shoulder is needed. The thread is cut normally, then the die isreversed and run up to finish to the shoulder.

Adjustable reamer

A reamer with a number of moveable blades arranged around acentral mandrel, used in the same way as ordinary reamers. The diameter may bevaried over a small range, and though it can be set to size with the aid of amicrometer, it is advisable to make a test hole before using an adjustablereamer for a critical purpose.

Adjustable wrench

A spanner-like tool that can be adjusted to fit differentsizes of nut. Renowned for the ability of some modern designs and inferiortypes to round off the corners of a nut.
