Preface
C orporate downsizing and across-the-board resource reductions often result in cutbacks in training budgets and programs. The need for training during such times, however, assumes increasing importance. Fewer employees must do more with less. To slight training is to risk not achieving performance objectives.
An ever-sophisticated work force demands new approaches to training and new training activities. One of my primary objectives in editing this book was to provide trainers with previously unpublished activities. Although some may have circulated among informal training networks, all the contributors were asked to submit original, unpublished work.
The activities are organized into twenty different categories, representing a variety of training topics. They range from icebreakers, climate-setting, and getting-acquainted activities to diversity, team-building, evaluation, and implementation activities. The differing backgrounds of the contributors add variety that is not possible when activities are written by one or two authors alone.
To help you, the reader, select from among activities, I have prepared a decision matrix, which follows this preface. The activities are listed alphabetically down the left side of the matrix; categories of usage are listed across the top. As with any categorization scheme, there is some overlap among categories. An activity in the leadership category, for instance, also may be useful for climate setting and team building. The alternative uses of each exercise are designated by an X in the grid. Thus, the Broomstick Demonstration has Xs under the topical headings for Icebreaker and Team Building. The small rectangle indicates where the activity is located in the book. Thus, for the Broomstick Demonstration example, the rectangle appears under the category of Change Management.
