This book was produced in EPUB format by the Internet Archive.

The book pages were scanned and converted to EPUB format automatically. This process relies on optical character recognition, and is somewhat susceptible to errors. The book may not offer the correct reading sequence, and there may be weird characters, non-words, and incorrect guesses at structure. Some page numbers and headers or footers may remain from the scanned page. The process which identifies images might have found stray marks on the page which are not actually images from the book. The hidden page numbering which may be available to your ereader corresponds to the numbered pages in the print edition, but is not an exact match; page numbers will increment at the same rate as the corresponding print edition, but we may have started numbering before the print book's visible page numbers. The Internet Archive is working to improve the scanning process and resulting books, but in the meantime, we hope that this book will be useful to you.

The Internet Archive was founded in 1996 to build an Internet library and to promote universal access to all knowledge. The Archive's purposes include offering permanent access for researchers, historians, scholars, people with disabilities, and the general public to historical collections that exist in digital format. The Internet Archive includes texts, audio, moving images, and software as well as archived web pages, and provides specialized services for information access for the blind and other persons with disabilities.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

The pioneering research of Dr. C. Orion Truss in the uncoveringof Candida's involvement in a wide range of diseases and conditionsdeserves recognition. I respectfully dedicate this book to him. Otherswho have made major contributions to our knowledge about Candida, and to whom I owe a debt, include Dr. William G. Crook and Dr.Jeffrey Bland. I have quoted from the works of all three of theserespected scientists, and thank them on behalf of all those who willbenefit from their original research. The books of Dr. Truss andDr. Crook (The Missing Diagnosis and The Yeast Connection, respec-tively) are particularly worthy of study by anyone who wishes to havea deeper understanding of this subject.

Candida Yeast andCommon Health Problems

Jvecently, it has become clear thata great many common health problems, both physical and mental, might have a common causenamely, the spread in the body of a yeastthat lives in each and every one of us. Its name is Candida albicans;and we will call it Candida for short.

Because it is present in all people from about the age of six months, doctors tend to overlook Candida as the cause of various diseases orconditions. Because it occurs in everyone, it would seem that Can-dida could not cause health problems in only some. This reasoninghas diverted attention from Candida, except in rare conditions in whichit proliferates to such an extent as to become life-threatening. Thiscritical condition often happens in people whose immune system hasbeen weakened by disease or drugs (in therapy or in abuse). However, many people may indeed be suffering from a less-pronounced spreadof Candida, which, while not sufficient to endanger life, is certainlyenough to produce a wide array of debilitating symptoms. Theseinclude depression; anxiety; unnatural irritability; digestive symptomssuch as diarrhea, constipation, bloating, and heartburn; tiredness anda sense of hopelessness; allergies; acne; migraine; cystitis; vaginitis;thrush; and menstrual problems and premenstrual tension.

The key to understanding the way in which this vast array ofsymptoms could possibly be caused by a yeast that lives in all of us

lies in an appreciation of the factors that can encourage a spread ofyeast. In most people there is an uneasy truce between their bodiesand the yeast. For most of us an equilibrium exists. The yeast canliveeven thriveand present no problems to its host, as long as itis confined to specific sites. Should it go beyond these sites, the defensecapability of the body, as represented by its immune system in generaland its white blood cells in particular, attacks and destroys the yeast. There are also actual physical barriers, such as the mucous lining ofthe digestive tract, which prevents intrusion through it by yeast or anyother undesirable elements. All mucous membranes contain furtherprotective substances that can destroy invading particles of yeast. Wewill consider these defenses later, in our search for an understandingof Candida.

Health problems arise when, because of one of a variety of causes, the body's defense capability becomes deficient or weakens. Shouldthis happen, the controls that keep Candida in check are removed, and the yeast can spread to areas that are normally out of bounds. If at the same time the foods the yeast thrives on happen to be in plen-tiful supply, we have the right environment for an explosion of Can-dida activity. This is precisely the combination of factors that hasbecome widespread in Western society over the past twenty-five tothirty years. The introduction of broad-spectrum antibiotics, the useof the contraceptive pill, and the widespread use of steroids, have allplayed their part in Candida's growth. In addition the increase in theuse of sugar and sugar-rich foods has provided the yeast with just thesustenance it needs. This unfortunate combination of factors is the rootcause of yeast-related symptoms for many people.

To understand Candida, a careful look at the nature of the enemyis necessary, together with consideration of those factors and cir-cumstances that allow it to proliferate, and what the consequences ofsuch a proliferation might be. We will look at the dietary aspect ofCandida in detail, and also at those changes in medical care that haveinadvertently allowed Candida's new-found freedom from adequate
