PREFACE
M any people wonder why a modern, Western-trained medical doctor would choose to write a book on ancient Taoist sexual practices. The reason is simple: As a physician who is passionate about female health and sexuality, I am interested in what works for women. As a woman, however, Im amazed by the incredible pleasure and harmony Ive experienced through Taoist lovemaking techniques. I first encountered Taoist sexuality during my medical training when my husband, Doug, began working on a book with Master Mantak Chia on male sexuality. Initially I was skeptical of the traditional claims that the Taoist sexual practices would improve ones health, but they are the most powerful techniques for sexual healing and transformation that I have encountered in both my personal and professional life.
As the demands of my life increased, including medical residency and the birth of our three children, I began to explore Taoist sexual and energetic principles specifically for women. The benefits for my energy level and well-being, both inside the bedroom and out, were tremendous. I was extremely grateful for the joy and pleasure that Taoist practices brought to my life. Then, once I established my practice as a family physician specializing in womens health, my interest in Taoist sexuality became professional as well as personal. As I witnessed the enormous suffering and frustration that so many women experienced in their sexual lives, I saw the need for a healthier and more holistic understanding of womens sexual energy and sexual pleasure.
I have learned these practices from Master Chia, who began studying Taoist practices as a child and has studied with many great Taoist masters (as well as Yogic and Buddhist masters). He is the founder of a comprehensive system of Taoist practice and healing called Universal Tao (previously called the healing Tao). Within the Universal Tao, he has distilled the essence of Taoist sexual wisdom into a unique system he calls Healing Love, which he has taught to hundreds of thousands of people around the globe over the last thirty years. Master Chia initially coauthored The Multi-Orgasmic Man with my husband to introduce men to a wiser and more satisfying understanding of mens sexuality. After that books wide reception, Doug and I coauthored The Multi-Orgasmic Couple with Mantak Chia and Maneewan Chia to offer couples an opportunity to explore the more intimate and profound lovemaking that men had discovered in the first book. I realized, however, that it was impossible to address womens varied, subtle, rich, and sometimes difficult sexuality in the depth that it deserves in a book for couples. It has since become clear to me from numerous readers, patients, and friends that many, many women have a difficult time accepting and cultivating the fullness of their own desire, let alone experiencing multiple orgasms. It is my hope that this new book, specifically for women, will help themand youto experience a level of joy and satisfaction in their lives that they may not have known was possible.
Taoist sexuality reminds us that we can only live truly healthy, dynamic, and meaningful lives if we connect to the source of our overall desire and vitalitythat is, our sexual energy. Our sexual energy is not some optional luxury. It is nothing less than a major source of the energy we have in our life as a whole. It is a wellspring of incredible power and joy for us if we cultivate it. The simple practices will teach you how to use your bodys own energetic resources to augment your sexual pleasure and profoundly heal your body. You will be able to enhance and expand your orgasmic ability and then use your pleasure and sexual energy to bring joy and vitality to your whole life.
Throughout the book I will be weaving in the stories of my patients and students on their journeys to greater pleasure and fulfillment through Taoist sexual practice. Although the insights and exercises come from both a Taoist master and a western doctor, we have decided that I should write this book in the first person. We believe that this is important for the kind of directness and intimacy that is essential for a subject as personal and profound as sexuality. While I am a physician and a student of the Tao, I hope you will see me simply as a friend and as a companion on your journey to experiencing your full desire, pleasure, and vitality.
By making time to explore your pleasure and to unleash your sexual energy, you will give yourself a most precious gift. You will also be giving a gift to everyone else in your lifenot only your partner, if you have one, but also everyone that you care for and who cares for you. The more fulfilled you are sexually, emotionally, and spiritually, the more energy and joy you will have to share with everyone in your life.
