Life and Background
Arthur Miller was born in New York on the seventeenth of October, 1915, and studied at the University of Michigan. Before becoming a playwright, he worked at various types of jobs, including work as a farm hand and various jobs around the New York harbor. Through these jobs he learned about the life of the simple man of America. And it is the simple man who is the subject of most of Miller's works. A View from the Bridge handled some aspect of waterfront work. The movie The Misfits, which incidentally starred his wife, the late Marilyn Monroe, draws from his experiences as a farm hand. Today, Mr. Miller lives in New York and does free lance writing in between his plays.
Mr. Miller's concern for the common man can be seen in all of his plays. His first success was All my Sons a play which investigates some basic assumptions about our capitalistic society. Death of a Salesman can be read as a drama of the common man being defeated by a society which drains the common man of his energy and then drops him. In fact, Mr. Miller's intense concern for the fate of the common man caused him to align himself with the theoretical possibilities of Communism. He was subsequently investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947 and was cleared completely by this committee. The point, however, is that Mr. Miller, aside from being a dramatist, is also an advocate for the underprivileged man.
Mr. Miller is today considered one of America's leading dramatists. Death of a Salesman is probably his most popular play. It won the Pulitizer Prize as the best play of 1949, and the movie version also won the first prize at the Venice film festival.
The serious reader should also read Miller's essay entitled ''Tragedy and the Common Man," in which he offers his theory of the common man as a fit subject for tragedy.
