Acknowledgments
Acknowledgments are a pleasure to write. Professor Bert Dillon, chair of the Department of English at the University of South Carolina, was always supportive. Carol Cutsinger typed the entire manuscript. My graduate assistant, Mary Katzif, tracked down fugitive bibliographical information and checked primary sources with energy and good humor. Amy Hudock read one of the chapters on feminist theory to make sure that I was not too far astray. Eric Roman used his expertise with the computer to help me with the list of sources. One of my most helpful colleagues, Professor Benjamin Franklin V, read parts of the manuscript and listened patiently as I discussed some of the ideas. My greatest debts are to Professor David Cowart of the University of South Carolina and to Professor Susan Strehle of the State University of New YorkBinghamton for reading the entire manuscript and for debating the issues sympathetically and constructively. Both were ideal readers. With this book I have climbed out on a limb yet again, but these colleagues have kept me from falling.
