The historical dictionaries present essential information on a broad range of - photo 1

The historical dictionaries present essential information on a broad range of subjects, including American and world history, art, business, cities, countries, cultures, customs, film, global conflicts, international relations, literature, music, philosophy, religion, sports, and theater. Written by experts, all contain highly informative introductory essays of the topic and detailed chronologies that, in some cases, cover vast historical time periods but still manage to heavily feature more recent events.

Brief AZ entries describe the main people, events, politics, social issues, institutions, and policies that make the topic unique, and entries are cross-referenced for ease of browsing. Extensive bibliographies are divided into several general subject areas, providing excellent access points for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more. Additionally, maps, photographs, and appendixes of supplemental information aid high school and college students doing term papers or introductory research projects. In short, the historical dictionaries are the perfect starting point for anyone looking to research in these fields.

Editors Foreword

When writing the foreword to a book dealing with warfare that occurred in the Middle Ages, one wouldnt expect to use the adjective timely. Yet, after serious recent events, the topic of crusades is back, and this book describes crusaders coming from the West; jihads launched against them in the Middle East; clashes of nations, sects, and ideologies; kidnapping and ransom; assassination; and what we refer to as ethnic cleansing. Although the parallels might seem poor and sometimes incongruous, understanding the historical crusades can help explain current events. That is one of the reasons why this second edition has become an even more important part of the War, Revolution, and Civil Unrest series.

The Historical Dictionary of the Crusades addresses a long period of intermittent warfare that involves often incomprehensible concerns and events. Thus the topic is approached from different angles. The dictionary section provides succinct entries on places both in Europe and the Middle East; large numbers of people including kings and sultans, popes and warriors, and preachers and chroniclers; various crusades with major campaigns, battles, and sieges; weapons and armor; and relevant aspects of land and naval warfare. Those who want to know more can find many additional resources in the bibliography.

This second edition, like the first, was written by Corliss K. Slack, professor of European history at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. She covers the medieval period and the crusades, on which she wrote her first book,
