To my daughter, Maggie. May she be blessed with health, happiness, and fitness and always enjoy a good workout.
Authors Acknowledgments
From Betsy:
I wish to thank my husband, Mark, for encouraging me to take on this project. Ive often joked that his idea of physical fitness is bending twice at the waist before we play tennis, but Im proud that hes in incredible shape.
Thanks to Mark Reiter of IMG Literary for conceiving the book, as well as the fine folks at Wiley: Stacy Collins, Lisa Roule, and Gregg Summers.
I enjoyed being paired with my writing doubles partner, Mike Yorkey, who did a great job incorporating my thoughts and performing the bulk of the research. Without him on board, I would not have considered the project. Mike has written nearly two dozen books and is the former editor of Focus on the Family magazine. He and I will be teaming up on In His Court, which will be released in 2001.
Special thanks to experts who gave freely of their advice: Dr. Jim Loehr, a longtime friend; Fred Dolan of StretchMate; and David Donatucci, the director of the International Performance Institute at the Bollettieri Sports Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
Pamela Smith, a neighbor of mine, receives my thanks for granting permission to quote from her Ten Commandments of Great Nutrition. Pam is a nationally known nutritionist, author, and culinary consultant whose most recent book is The Diet Trap.
Steven Mercer, my massage therapist, and fitness expert Dave Herman were a superb help with the photo illustrations, which were taken at The Fitness Center in Celebration, Florida, where Gar Simers is the general manager.
My thanks go to Dr. Bernard Watkin, Dr. Richard Steadman, Topper Haggerman, and John Adkins, who have helped me rebound from surgeries and injuries over the years.
I appreciate the insights of Alan Freedman and Joey Abramson (owners of six Fitness Outlet stores on the West Coast), Lisa Hutchison and Katrina Boyd of Ribet (a San Diego fitness retail company), and Chelsea Valach of Adventure 16 Outdoor and Travel Outfitters in Solana Beach, California.
