At the age of eight, Janet Carroll was taught to tat by her grandmother. Since then she has developed a business as a master tatter and folk artist, and has received recognition for her work from the South Dakota Arts Council and the South Dakota Cultural and Heritage Center. In addition to teaching classes for tatters at all levels of experience, she has given numerous demonstrations at museums and art centers. She is married and has two children, a girl and a boy
